Okay, some odd things happened in just ten minutes of watching late night television.

First, now that Craig Kilborn has left The Late Late Show, they've been rotating guest hosts. At the start this was vaguely interesting, as they got cool folks like Michael Ian Black. But they are now clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel. Some of you might recall a post of mine about a truly horrid show that ran for six episodes in the summer of 1980 called Pink Lady and Jeff; well, tonight they had that same Jeff Altman hosting the Late Late Show. And the man is still unfunny. Boy howdy.

The odd thing is, I was reading Kare Kano this week, and there was a reference to Pink Lady!

Also odd: Conan was a rerun from this summer, where he was making fun of that NY Post headline saying that Kerry was picking Gephardt for his running mate. So he had other "impossible" newspaper headlines, that culminated in, "Heterosexual Conan O'Brien celebrates Red Sox World Series Victory!"

Hmmmm. Possibly time for bed, then.

Hmm, the Kare Kano thing - that may not be in the actual Japanese. It happens a lot in manga translation that Japanese pop culture references are changed to American ones, most notably idol singers into American singers such as Britney, Christina, *Nsync and the like. However, as the people doing the translations tend to be complete dorks (not that this is a bad thing) these translations sometimes become very obscure references, instead of the intended obvious references. This might be one of those cases.

Hee - I remember a manga (though I can't actually remember which ...) where one of the characters starting going insane because she saw Natalie Merchant CD. XD

Then again, western artists do well in Japan, so it's very hard to know whether it was the original reference or a change by the translators.

Hey, it's an easy mistake, especially since they do sometimes change the pop culture refs.

Hee! Pink Lady! (I do believe they also show up in the anime. Dunno the scene, but if it's the same one, it's friggin' hilarious. "Why is this song running through my head?!")
