I don't believe it!
Oct. 27th, 2004 12:13 amI had this whole post written about records being matched and broken and then my computer froze up so never mind that.
For St Louis to win, they would have to come back from a 3-0 deficit, and only one team in Major League Baseball history has ever come back from 3-0 to win a best of seven series.
That would be the Red Sox, last week, against the Yankees.
However, this IS the Red Sox, and if there is a team that could come back from 3-0 only to lose to another team coming back from 3-0, it would be the Red Sox.
ETA: From boston.com: Get ready, Boston. There's no other outcome now: Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox will either win the World Series or add another historic collapse to their legend.
Yep. One. More. Game.

Which could be a good thing...

Date: 2004-10-27 07:24 am (UTC)It really is a head game, which is why the Red Sox so often lose at the end, because somehow the city can't quite believe that they can win. I've seen it happen so many times--either a late season collapse, or losing the pennant, or in the Series itself. I also think, though, that the way the Sox think about things will help them now, because it's only about winning one game. For once, the curse helps us because looking ahead to winning the whole thing is how you lose games, because you lose focus.
All that said, I do hope that the Cards have another great year next year, and it would do us well to remember that a lot of teams underestimated the Cards this year, and those teams aren't in the Series.

Date: 2004-10-27 07:33 am (UTC)Lou Brock, a former great Cardinal, was on the news this morning, and he observed that the Cardinals were playing to not lose, instead of doing as you say the Sox are doing - playing to win one game at a time. It's frustratingly true. Argh.
they were playing any other team I would be cheering for them right along with you, and that is the truth.
This is exactly how I feel about the Red Sox. And frankly, I'll be happy if they win. I've liked that team every year, and I've been pulling for them to make it to the World Series. I'll be bummed if they win over the Cards, but if we have to be beat by *any* team, the Red Sox is the team I'd choose.
