So I haven't said that much about my life lately. This morning I was up early to watch [livejournal.com profile] blackholly on the CBS Early Show, where luckily she didn't get bumped by Frances/Chechnya/RNC. She and Tony were great, and I have it on tape! Yay!

While I was waiting for her to come on air, I was sitting here typing and trying not to look at the TV when they talk about the speech last night, which gave me a sudden flash of that scene in All the President's Men where Woodward and Bernstein are in the news room typing while Nixon is being nominated on a tiny television they they are not watching. I was going back and forth between the audio for the tv and NPR so as to avoid even the tiniest soundbite of the speech last night. I have to say, I'm amused that GWB is only the third lead this morning, after the hurricane and that horrible hostage tragedy in Chechnya, so it hasn't actually been that difficult to skip out on GWB.

I have successfully completely skipped the entire RNC, which leads to my relatively good mood today. I think half of NYC was out of town, because even though the avenue near me leads into one of the tunnels, and had two lanes blocked off, there hasn't been any traffic on it. I'm not sure why most of the avenues had two lanes blocked off, but I suppose it gave all those police officers something to do. There were cops directing traffic on every corner in midtown and then just generally hanging around all over the place.

(I'll be very happy when all that settles down because it's unnerving. There were helicopters with search lights flying over my neighborhood last night! We didn't even have that after 9.11 or back in the mid 90s when this actually was a sketchy area. What the hell, is this LA?)

The most interesting thing I've found so far about this election is the reaction of old-time conservatives, especially Andrew Sullivan. One gets the sense that he is staring in horror at the goings-on, thinking, "What happened to my party?" Both his response to Zell Miller (who, I'm sorry, hasn't been a democrat for 25 years) and the article in the September Esquire (in two parts, "Why I want to vote for Bush . . . But why I can't"). As for Pataki, the fifth panel this week's This Modern World pretty much sums up my feelings about the Republicans using 9.11—and he's the worst of them.

Getting up this morning for the show wasn't actually that bad. As [livejournal.com profile] calloocallay pointed out, I am a morning person, and I just have to accept that! I will say, in my defense, that this doesn't mean that I'm a totally annoying sunny person in the morning that wants everyone to wake up at 6am with smiles on their faces. But I do want to plant morning glories in whatever garden I might have later in life. There were some pink and purple ones on the gate of the park near my house and I always think of them as a reward for being up and about, like the clean(er) air and the soft light. However, I am off to clean my apartment while it's still actually morning. SFU will have to wait until the afternoon.

I actually like being up early, at least partly because it's quiet and I can putter around by myself or sit and cuddle the cat without interuption. :)

Morning glories: For a couple of years I lived in an apartment with a tiny balcony. Our landlord put up those, oh, what do you call them, those big shades, over all of the windows, and he put one over our balcony too. So one summer I planted a container garden out there, and strung twine from the railing to the shade and grew morning glory vines. We ended up with a gorgeous green curtain that was covered in the morning with blue, purple and white flowers. It was exquisite. The peaceful mornings out there, watering the plants with the breeze slipping through the vines - definitely a reward for being awake. :D

Do you mean an awning?

That sounds amazingly lovely. What a nice place to drink a cup of tea in the mornings!
