The food!

Friday I got to D's and gave him a call at work and he said, "There is no food in the house, so you're on your own." But I was far too tired to venture out and grab something, so I scrounged for some food in D's empty and oddly smelly fridge. (It turns out that D's fridge is leaking freon. After a day I recognized the odd smell and let him know and needless to say, he isn't all that happy about it.) I managed to find some frozen hamburgers and some low-carb frozen blueberry waffles. (Yep, he's living that low-carb lifestyle, but he's not a Nazi about it.) D got home and we grabbed some Indian for dinner in West LA.

Saturday we got breakfast at a little French place where I got the most interesting organic green soy chai latte and an interesting open-faced sandwich with poached eggs, ham and cheese on ciabatta. The place is a favorite among the area's French ex-pats so there were a lot of smokers and dogs on the porch. Then we went over to D's bf's place and hung out, and he fed us sausages and potato salad. (Apparently you can take the boy out of Chicago but not the Chicago out of the boy, which is good as D is from Detroit, himself.) Later we ran and got a quick slice before the movie, and it was—well, the opposite of DiGiorno. Like, if I hadn't seen it made before my own eyes I would have thought it was frozen. It had that weird cheese.

Sunday D made us pancakes and eggs and bacon, which were excellent as D has a way with breakfast food. Later, we went to this place called My Father's Office, a bar in Santa Monica that was C and his bf's first date (awww!) and where I had the best burger I have ever had. It was cooked perfectly, and topped with melted blue cheese, carmelized onions and bacon, and put on a french roll. It was just, amazing! I highly recommend it. For dinner, he made us grilled tuna steaks over greens with a sesame dressing, which was totally ummy and I don't even like tuna that much!

Monday I scrambled myself some eggs and had yum, a whole wheat English muffin before picking up C at the airport. He was starving, so we zoomed by In-and-Out Burger which has to be the best fast food burger like, ever. Later that night we all went out to Mexican for my birthday and had a lot of margaritas on the rocks and this amazingly good hot chocolate and yum, carnitas. Whee!

Tuesday C and I made a little breakfast and then went out to Pasadena and had fairly boring museum food at Huntington Gardens. Once back at D's, C cooked us a most excellent dinner (I was merely sous-chef) of beef cooked in a red wine and balsamic reduction with shallots and shitakis over soba noodles and a bit of red cabbage, with some cucumber rangoons to start, and then I made some vanilla whipped cream and served it with fruit for a simple desert.

Wednesday C and I made D breakfast before we left on our long drive. On the way back we stopped off for some fish and carnitas tacos at Pancho's in Santa Monica, and I have to say, you always want to get tacos in some hole in the wall place while you're in LA, don't you? Once D was home, I made the three of us chicken over a salad with a shallot vinaigrette.

Thursday, we went to Palm Springs and ate lunch at the kind of restaurant that your grandparents take you to--you know, with the early bird special and the weird art nouveau decor and the waitress who calls you honey. I had a hot dog and C had some really excellent meatloaf and we both drank a lot of diet coke. Once back in Venice, we went out to have amazing sushi—actually, mostly sashimi, but ooh delish.

Friday D made us pancakes and then toddled off to work. C and I hung about and made ourselves a bit of salad, then went into town. We went back and went through all the food in the fridge to try to use as much as we could, as D was going away for a week's vacation on Sunday morning. I'm very proud of us, actually, as we managed to make a stir fry with the leftover beef, adding a little bit of chicken, some bell pepper, and a bunch of broccoli; a cole slaw with the left over cabbage plus carrots and pea pods; the rangoon with a little spicy dipping sauce for it; a salad of heirloom tomatoes and feta cheese; and some toasts of olive bread and blue cheese. C and I were cooking machines! Lovely, lovely leftover dinner.

Saturday we went to a local place for brunch where I had some fab huevos rancheros and C had some salmon hash, and D had some duck pancakes and yum. C was off to the airport, alas, and then D and I went and got some more tacos and then, finally, it was time for me to go as well. Sad!

Of course, since I've returned to NYC I've had nothing but take out.

Okay, so what is the deal with In-and-Out Burger, because everyone is raving about it all the time and I just do not know what is going on.

You have made me very hungry. And aside from the late hour, there is no food. *weeps* I envy your foodness on your trip - it all sounds so good!

The burger is not too large, but a very nice size in the bun.

The bun is toasted, crunchy and golden brown inside.

It's served in the sort of waxed paper box that french fries come in, so the burgers don't steam inside of paper, yet are not messy to eat.

They're cooked when you order them, so you have to wait for your number to be called.

They have this excellent sauce on them, and lettuce and tomato, and they ask if you want onion.

Is that enough?

I believe so, although really I suppose the only thing is to taste them. I am always hearing about actresses who are like, "I must have a dozen In-and-Out burgers a day!"

Really? Who are these people? But yes, make all haste to In-and-Out Burger. And in Santa Monica there's a quickie auto service place called In-and-Out Lube that never fails to make me snicker.

You know, I watched Christina and Nelly on that VMA show. They were quite good. She makes an amazing flapper.

See, I was making the first post and realized I was going on and on and fucking on about driving and eating. But I think the best vacations are basically driving and eating, anyway, so I had a really great time. However, alas for you!

Kirsten Dunst and Tom Cruise are the first people I can think of.

I actually didn't see that, because I fell asleep during the Hoobastank/Jet/Yellowcard performance and then went to bed, but I did hear the mp3 online later.

That there is pretty much how she looked. That curly blonde hair look.

I heard that Hoobastank pretty much blew it. Yellowcard I have much love for, and Jet, though I think the Jet cd is a bit deeper in terms of other good songs than Yellowcard. I should just get that Yellowcard song on itunes, really. Because I checked out the new NOW, and I didn't even want those songs!

Yeah, I saw her on the pre-show, and then these pictures of her in an adorable green dress that I am not sure if she performed in or was just wearing at some point. My only complaint is that she wears fishnets as I happen to think thigh highs and garter belts or seamed stockings are much sexier, but whatever.

I heard the same about Hoobastank, and I cannot remember at all because I was falling asleep in that way that you do at school or work, where you are dropping your head down, snapping it back up quickly, and pretending you are awake.

According to Scott the Metrosexual coworker, the Hoobastank guy was singing entirely out of tune, though it is unclear whether because his monitor was out or because his voice was shot, and actually ended the performance slightly early because it so clearly wasn't working.

This is what I also heard, and that, in addition, he had the audience singing the high notes so that it was, "And the reason is ... !!!!!!"

That's so unfortunate.

And I know we talked about this last night, but you are so glad you missed Jessica doing "Angel" because it just isn't good at all. She has a great voice but that was the wrong song for it. And I have no idea what the hell was all going on behind her.

Now they're having this countdown of the top 22 video artists of all time. #8 is TLC.
