This year, 73 stories in 38 fandoms, including the fandom I both wrote in and got fic for, Vertigo (Midge/Judy). I received Portrait of Carlotta and I wrote To Live My Life the Way I Want and you could read both but definitely the former.

I've kept the fic by fandom and divvied them up into: mostly femslash with some lady-centered gen; mostly het with het-background gen; mostly slash with some dude-centered gen; gen and threesomes.

Ladies! Anne of GG, Cagney and Lacey, Carol, Clue, Heiress, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters RPF, Justified, Miss Fisher, Price of Salt, Rosemary and Thyme, Tipping the Velvet, Whip It; 27 )

Het! 10 Things I Hate About You, Actor RPF, Arrival, Bob's Burgers, Broad City, Brooklyn, Hail Caesar!, Lord Peter, Persuasion, Selfie, The Thin Man; 23 )

Dudes! All The President's Men, Eagle of the Ninth, Good Will Hunting, Hamilton RPF, Metropolitan, Moby-Dick, Nero Wolfe, Popstar, The Sting; 15 )

The Rest! GBBO, Poirot, The Martian, Singin' in the Rain; 7 )
jlh: (teen wolf: erica)
Erica/Lydia recs! The rules: no WIPs, had to have the pairing as more than just a one-off in a series of drabbles or as background (though where noted they share the stage). That left me with 21 fics out of the 40 listed at AO3.

recs below the cut )

Today I posted the bridge fic between EWFS and the sequel:
Entr'Acte: Harry/Hermione, Draco/Ginny, Pansy/Parvati, Seamus/Dean, Ron/Padma, 7100 words, PG-13. They won the war as teenagers, and now they're moving on with their lives as adults, but they're no longer headed in the same direction.
Livejournal | Dreamwidth | Archive of Our Own

Three recs:
  1. Yesterday my Pansy/Parvati story ended up on [livejournal.com profile] quibbler_report, which is for rare pairings, and one of the other fics was the completely adorable The Photo Album by [livejournal.com profile] mozarts_piano: Harry Potter finds a photo album in his son's apartment one day. (Teddy Lupin/James Sirius Potter, Harry Potter, PG)
  2. Thanks to certain people on my LJ and tumblr, I've been using the [livejournal.com profile] suitsmeme as bedtime reading and this is also completely adorable and very accessible even if you haven't seen much of the show: 'Til You Gave Out All Your Skin by [personal profile] mockturtletale. Hilarious.
  3. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be adding [livejournal.com profile] emiliglia's AUBB fic The Greater Good to my delicious account very soon, but I haven't finished it yet. (That is, I read the end and then went back and I'm in part three, but you know, I read the ends of things.)

Anyone available in September to beta 20-25,000 words of Janice Rand/Christine Chapel 1920s Paris AU fic for STBB, please let me know.
jlh: Duckie Dale from Pretty in Pink (gents: Duckie Dale)
Okay, I'm done with Yuletide reading. You RED fans can find a pile of interesting fics, both Victoria/Ivan and our pal Agent Cooper. My yuletide recs include Carol Burnett-Julie Andrews Actor RPF, Anne of Green Gables, The Apartment, Stoppard's Arcadia, Arrested Development, Austen (S&S and Persuasion), Brick, Calvin & Hobbes, Golden Girls, Great Gatsby, James Bond, The Runaways (2010), Ramona Series (Beverly Cleary), A Single Man, Victor/Victoria, Whip It, and Good Wife/White Collar.

Then at brunch yesterday I realized that I'd meant to make this post of[livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang and [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang recs, particularly as there are some of you out there looking for long fics to crawl into. The RPF fics are either Kradam or Chris/Karl Trek. I'm a Kirk/McCoy girl, so that's a lot of what you'll see in the ST recs, plus some Chekov/Sulu and Pike/Number One and a lot of Spock/Uhura in the background. Oh, and tons of AUs: regency romance, Inception-inspired, WWII, Indiana Jones-esque, even post-apocalyptic (and you know how I feel about that).

17 fics, so a lot to read in here )
jlh: Lanie from Castle (castle: Lanie)
Seriously, try to look down the whole list because there ain't much of a theme here. Three fics, three pics.

For the Supernatural bigbang, [livejournal.com profile] kitsune13 wrote You Say the Dead Need No Physician which she calls "totally old-school casefile Wincest, baby." And that's exactly what it is—Sam and Dean chasing down ghosts and learning new methods from respected elders in Charleston, SC, before, you know, figuring out they're in love.

For the AtLA big bang, [personal profile] ali_wildgoose wrote Son of Heaven which she says "is primarily about Iroh dealing with the difficult weeks after the death of his son, Lu Ten. There's no kissing of any kind, so no need to worry about being blindsided by a ship you're not interested in." Really moving, and if you love Iroh (seriously, who doesn't?) you should read it.

Also written for the AtLA big bang, [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora's fic is lighter in tone; Rinkrats is a totally awesome modern-day roller derby AU, Sokka/Suki focused, with Aang/Katara and Mai/Zuko. It's super hilarious, especially if you love Sokka as I love Sokka.

Wanna see Mercedes Jones in a corset? Well, first there's Kurt in a corset and a garter, then Kurt and Puck making out, and then Kurt lacing up Mercedes into her corset. They're all pretty spectacular.

Inception cast as My Little Ponies. Yes, that's what I said. They're awesome. Robert might be my favorite.

For [personal profile] mardia, a completely adorable pic of Karl and Zoe that just showed up on my tumblr dashboard via the KU Library.

Finally, if you all could send some good karma so that my poor little [livejournal.com profile] rpf_big_bang fic gets claimed by an artist I would really appreciate it! Happily I have an artist and mixer in place for the [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang fic.
jlh: The Beatles in a pile with the banner "love sandwich" (music: The Beatles)
First, thanks to everyone who replied to my previous post about being a bad fangirl. It's crazy how often any of us feel that way! (it's crazy.) The most frequent reply I received was that if I'm having fun and not harming anyone I can't be doing it wrong. I rarely think of fandom as something that I'm doing for my own self-satisfaction, so I'll have to think about that statement for a while.

A friend asked for my definition of a "good" fangirl, and while I gave it to her in the comments I decided that rather than laying it out here, I'd flip it and talk about the things that I do that I feel aren't really in that definition. (Turning negatives into positives makes me feel a lot better.) This isn't about disparaging the majority, hopefully, but about celebrating the minority!! So today's aspect: schmoop, fluff, comfort, domesticity. )

Anyway, I got two really splendid comfort fics a few weeks ago and wanted to share them with you all! (I wrote some recently as well, but like all my comment fic it needs a bit of a clean up before I post it)

Dear [livejournal.com profile] amyamy wrote me some Kirk/McCoy, Seeking Slumber, the night before I left for Infinitus. I had to get up at ridiculous o'clock to get on a plane and a conversation with a friend had both gone too late and upset me a good deal; she came on chat and calmed me down and I was able to get to sleep. When I woke up, this adorable little fic was in my email.

Last month someone posted a fandom secret about how they often wrote comfort fic for their friends but no one wrote it for them. In the comments I sympathized and noted that when I'd been mugged not long ago I'd asked just for links to comfort fic and didn't get many. And then in the comments of [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, [livejournal.com profile] shadowbyrd wrote me some delightful Percy/Oliver fluff!

Link me if you can--what's some fluffy/schmoopy fic that you've been enjoying?

recs!

Generally I rec things that are in fandoms I'm not really in. While I'm hugely behind on ST reviewing, you can see my recs on my delicious. (Seriously behind—I'm up to mid-Oct.)

ANYWAY, here's some Glee and some Idolslash.

I'd rec'd [livejournal.com profile] honestys_easy's Outlaw's Prayer a while ago when it was still a WIP, mostly because I'm familiar enough with her writing to know that it was finished and wasn't going to go all pear-shaped. Well, it's now completed and even has a soundtrack! So if you like stories about the American West, go forth and read it. You needn't know much about Idol, or David Cook, to enjoy it though if you really want a primer Ari's made one for you here.

The always-fabulous [livejournal.com profile] kitsune13 has moved on from writing Will/Quinn to writing Will/Rachel! The Map Is Not the Territory is kind of amazing and not just because I got to beta it. Rachel's insanely perfect here, and also perfectly insane, which is entirely appropriate! The way in which Will and Rachel come together here makes so much sense.

(I've told Catja that I would like her to write Will/everyone in New Directions, one at a time, and then there will be a huge reveal at commencement that Will is actually a huge playa.)

Last but not least, a rec via [livejournal.com profile] jenncho: I Now Pronounce You Husband and Keeper by [livejournal.com profile] toestastegood. Sue/Will, pegging. Do you need more than that? Fine: "Sue needs a trophy husband, and she knows just the man for the job. Warnings for pegging, dub-con, Sue." It's awesome, it's hilarious, it's a must-read.

Hmm, I think I just like watching girls who aren't Terri pushing Will around. Or boys played by Neil Patrick Harris.
jlh: photo of old fashioned green typewriter keys (typewriter green)
Now that Castle has been renewed I can happily look forward to another season for all my scripted shows: HIMYM, Castle, Community, White Collar and Glee. I'm also enjoying Justified so far; anyone else watching that?

Speaking of Glee, I had the privilege of beta'ing [livejournal.com profile] kitsune13's Every Rule I Had. It's Will/Quinn, a really lovely ride if you like those characters. And sure, somewhat of a forbidden love, but come on, it's Catja. She was incest when incest wasn't cool, so a little teacher/student really isn't going to faze her.

Generally I wait until things are done to rec them, but I do know that [livejournal.com profile] honestys_easy has finished writing her story, a western AU about David Cook and his own merry band of bank robbers with a dollop of AI8 characters as the nice townfolk (and as deputy, one Kris Allen). Even if you're not in Cook fandom or Idol fandom I think you'll find a lot to like in Outlaw's Prayer.

Another story I've been working on as a beta, and is also nearly finished (all but the epilogue), is [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose's Something to Hold Onto. It's Avatar: the Last Airbender, Jet/Zuko, and I'll let Ali explain: "This is an AU that takes place during Season Three, and is built on the conceit that Jet never saw Iroh Firebending his tea." Tons of adventure, piles of romance, seriously what more do you people need?
jlh: Kirk and McCoy, in tshirts, kissing (KMc smooch)
I know I've been threatening this for a while, but here it is: my Kirk/McCoy rec list on delicious. The tags should be self-explanatory, just the rating and the timeframe of the fic: academy/pre-mission (that gap in the movie between the battle with the Narada and leaving on the 5 year mission)/5yearmission/AU. Right now my recs cover May-September; in October a lot of challenges started getting posted, and I still haven't read through all of those. Updates to come when I've read and reviewed more fics!

(Did I mention how weird it is to be shipping the main ship of a big fandom? Because it is really, really weird, and throws my Idol experience into very sharp contrast. HP, too.)

A few personal preference notes:
  • I want happy endings, and stories where they end up together. It's just how I roll.
  • I love Alternate Universes. Of course I do; I keep writing them. I'll label, but one thing I adore about this pairing is how many great AU's there have been.
  • I don't like character death. You won't find any here. Nor all that much angst and certainly no angst for angst's sake.
  • I also am not a fan of hurt/comfort, and as you might guess, there is a lot of room for hurt/comfort in K/Mc, of the physical or psychological/emotional variety. You won't find much of it on my list.

and a few fandom notes:
  • I'm not reccing stuff off the kink meme mostly because I rarely bother to go through it. Things that moved from there to being posted on [livejournal.com profile] kirk_mccoy may be here.
  • I don't read K/Mc/S. I also don't read any of the Doom crossover stuff where Bones is also that guy from Doom that Karl Urban played.
  • There won't be any rpf on here, not of course because I don't care for rpf but because I've never really been into actor rpf anyway.

If you want a place to start, a non-AU how-they-got-together to get your feet under you, try either [livejournal.com profile] lindmere's Angular Momentum or [livejournal.com profile] dancinbutterfly's The One With the Romulan Ale. Enjoy!
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Clio Chibi)
I requested Kim and Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks, and got TWO gift fics!

Growing Upside Down. Lindsay finally discovers the part of her she's been trying to find since high school. Femslash.

write her name in the sky. Kim broke up with Daniel for the last time three days after she and Lindsay got back from their summer adventure.

There were also two Rymon fics written for Yuletide this year, the first for [personal profile] ignaz and the second for [livejournal.com profile] delilah_joy:

And When It Was Good. There are shows when it's good, when they're on.

Where We're Going, and How to Get Back. There are things less like relationships.

Go, read, comment! Yayness!
jlh: Barney and Robin, posing with arms around each other (himym: Barney and Robin)
For me: While I was at MoCCA this weekend I thought about how much boyslash is floating around all the time and how much more girlslash I need in my immediate vicinity, and I'm awaiting [livejournal.com profile] femslash08 with great interest.

In the meantime, I'm looking for novels or manga with lesbian themes. I am planning on reading Sarah Waters's books for a lot of reasons, but I'd love to read other things—any recommendations? I prefer romances and mysteries as genres, and I do like historical fiction but I also like things set in the present day.

For you: [livejournal.com profile] foxysquid was in NYC this weekend for MoCCA and ended up in my flat on Sunday evening enjoying AC and gazpacho (for those of you who heard my tale of woe on Saturday, we got it in eventually) and I was reminded, for no apparent reason, of Amanuensis's Rituals and Traditions, an oldie-but-goodie Harry/Draco story. Hilarious, and entirely ridiculous, and completely awesome. Link is to the author's website—thanks, [livejournal.com profile] anemonerose!

Also, through a sequence of events that included [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, I found a really superlative Kiss Kiss Bang Bang story, You Know What They Say About Eavesdroppers. Harry/Perry, NC-17, plus a very well done Harmony.

I've actually been reading a great deal of het lately, despite these recs. As you might expect the HIMYM fandom has exploded with Barney/Robin since the series finale, and [livejournal.com profile] himym_fic has a lot of it. I hesitate to make recs because really, there isn't that much fic and also it depends on your preferred take on the pairing. I say check it out!
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (cake squee)
I just sent 10,000 words of Rymon to poor [livejournal.com profile] dana_kujan and how do I repay her? By writing a "Cake" Rec Post. All recs are always for [livejournal.com profile] samgrrrl because she likes recs. There isn't a lot here, just four authors that I'm willing to say you should read, one of which you absolutely must (that means you, [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie).

Ah, Cake: Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis. Background, or why this is all lillijulianne's fault. )

So you know how we're always talking about how we want our porn to be really smart, and tell a story through the sex, and not be all "ew girly bits"? Ladies and Gentlemen, meet [livejournal.com profile] lillijulianne. My links at del.icio.us include the dates she posted the stories and I suggest that you read them in that order. 42 stories, though each one is fairly short, and a lot of it also includes Kat McPhee (hence the "McCake"). She's given us not only really layered takes on these "characters" but also an intense emotional arc. These are the kinds of stories that we're always trying to find, the kind you can really sink your teeth into, and I can't recommend them highly enough. No, really, run don't walk.

For really well-written, mostly smutty, ship fic, I also recommend two other writers, [livejournal.com profile] birdisland and [livejournal.com profile] ruby_fruit. Rubyfruit's 12 stories are incredibly hot, inventive, with that little bit of humor at the core that makes them really fun to read. Birdisland's 8 stories are in a more impressionistic style, but no less sexy.

Then there are writers who are writing stories that feel like you could have written them yourself, and you're just so glad they're writing, too. For me, the latter is [livejournal.com profile] lessthangreat—except she's a lot more prolific than I am; I've linked to 19 stories here, and all are funny and loving with a sweetness underneath. She does great dialogue and her stories really, in the end, are just fun to read. Some are lighter than others, but I recommend them all.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Ryan and Simon are adorable)
So, this isn't a rec journal really, as half the stuff I read I don't think of as something anyone else wants to read, but two things spurred me to this post: [livejournal.com profile] allysonsedai mentioning that she wanted to read Rymon fic, and [livejournal.com profile] samgrrrl saying that she loved fic recs. So I thought I'd start with a Rymon rec list and then maybe go on from there to put down the fics that I really loved of the various little fandoms I've had "affairs" with, if for no other reason than my own records.

A couple of caveats. I don't like angstfests or downer endings. I avoid stories where Simon is a completely uncaring arse just as much as where he's too fluffy. If any of you know of things that aren't at [livejournal.com profile] idolslash, let me know. I'm not including the S6 stories because they're easy to find. All of these, though, are also in my memories.

I would love to be able to point you to the Ur-text, the "this is why we love them", the "this is the best story of how they got together" but it doesn't exist. This may be because they don't give good slow burn, but rather seem to me like a collision of planets, a sort of immediate connection, and the story is rather more when (or if) they stopped just fucking and really fell for each other. And there aren't even that many stories to begin with. So I give you six stories to read right now, four more worth checking out, one that has its moments, and the lowdown on the rest.

Rymon recs. )

Happy reading!
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Olbermann)
Or, some thoughts on RPS.

But first, a rec: Belongs to Us is worth joining [livejournal.com profile] punditslash to read. (All the TDS/TCR and CNN/MSNBC type RPS is locked in the comms because the Comedy Central blog has a tendency to link to them.) Fantastic Keith Olbermann/Dan Patrick slash with all the backstory, regret and make-up sex of your average golden age Sirius/Remus fic. A short version of their backstory, and perhaps why you should care. ) The title of this entry is from their radio show where they did an extended and completely hilarious riff on Larry King.

The start of American Idol, and more directly my posts about them, always makes me vaguely nervous about the risks of tinhattery that one always runs when thinking about RPS. )

So I thought, more for my own feeling of comfort than any of yours as many of you assure me that you don't think of me as a tinhat, that I would lay out what I actually think is going on, rather than my fun shippiness, so you see that you know, I'm not crazy. Also I was thinking about this after reading the TWoP recaps for last week. From what I've seen, we have four possibilities for what is a actually going on with Ryan and Simon. )

All that said, I think I write Ryan/Simon the way that I do not only to make a comment about what is going on with the show—a sort of fictional meta, if you will—but also to make Simon a tiny bit nicer than he actually is, and give Ryan the reward he does deserve, and in general make them both just a little bit braver than they are. Ryan and Simon make a great pair because Ryan is one of the few people who really isn't afraid of Simon one little bit, but also likes and respects him, while Simon responds very well to Ryan and sometimes is just a little bit nicer because of him. And you know how I love couples who can get under each other's skin.
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (HarryHermione)
There's been a lot of talk (maybe, maybe too much talk) about het smut fic good and bad. When I heard about the "fanfic writer appreciation week" I realized there is one writer who pretty much embodies everything I look for in a smut fic, whose writing I can't wait to read. I'm not alone in this; when RS.org was in its pre-launch phase the organizers posted asking for help finding het smut for their opening, and nearly all of the replies mentioned this one author as a must-have. I can't think of a better endorsement than that.

This essay is not a rebel essay. This essay is an appreciation of [livejournal.com profile] ladycadey, het smut writer extraordinaire.

Way down inside honey, you need it. )
jlh: seamus and dean snuggling in bed (SD chibi)
Oh, you know, everything is fine here, so I'm sorry if people thought I sounded down in my last post! I was just a little bored and not wanting to do work and annoyed that no one was on YM.

Anyway, so one miss [livejournal.com profile] fiatincantatum pointed me to a fabu Seamus/Dean story by Delphi ([livejournal.com profile] atdelphi) on [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies that you all should go read. Some nice reviewer of the story had mentioned me which got me all ego-y. And then I reviewed with my S/D Clio icon, which was probably obnoxious but whatever.

Which leads to my confession: I am driven insane by jealousy for everyone who is a posting member of [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies! Okay, so I write more het than slash. Okay, so my slash pairing is a good deal rarer than Harry/Draco or Snarry. Still. Still!

However, since I should be all positive and shit, I'm going to wander off and write something for [livejournal.com profile] erotic_elves because I ♥ them.
