A meme and a sort-of quiz
Jun. 24th, 2003 10:23 am1. Describe in five words or less how you feel about Order of the Phoenix. (your initial reaction)
Devastated.
2. What are your feelings on Harry's personality? Do you think he is overly cynical, depressed, etc. . . .?
Completely perfect. Angry, verging on bitter, resentful, sullen, the entire thing. A perfect 15-year-old.
3. Do you think Order of the Phoenix is appropriate for children 13 and younger? Why or why not?
Some of them; it always depends. I would have no problem giving it to junior high school kids (12-13). For 10-11, I'd be cautious. The under 9 set I would probably read to them, and never at night. But with any of them under 12, I would have lots and lots of discussion with them about the book so they can talk out their feelings about the events.
4. List your five most hated characters (either in Book 5 or the whole series, non-humans can be included).
Like Marysia, these are the characters that made my eyes roll when they appeared on the page:
1. Hagrid
2. Mundungus Fletcher
3. Cho
4. Marietta
5. Dumbledore
5. Percy turned away from his family. Will he come crawling back to them now or . . .?
I doubt it. He burned that bridge pretty effectively. His issues ran much deeper than just whether Voldemort was back. It will be interesting to see what she does with him.
6. What did you think of the new DADA's punishment? Why didn't Harry nor Lee complain?
Here, I agree completely with Cyg: She did it because she COULD. They didn't complain because, as is often true in such circumstances, hey, it was a teacher. Who do you complain to?
7. What do you think of James and Lily now?
I think we've had so much Snapefic, and are so willing to side with the put upon, that we forget what Remus and Sirius said: Snape was a Dark Magic lover from the word go. James was being an arse but then, teenage boys are arses. I'm glad to see the halo removed. Very funny to see all that James/Lily love-hate getting confirmed. Lily was nicely sensible but no saint, either. I love that her reaction when Snape calls her names is essentially, "Boys!" and she washes her hands of the two of them. Good for her.
8. Has your opinion (which is probably not too good) of Petunia Dursley changed? If yes, how so?
Not entirely, as I always thought there had to be something else going on there. After all, she was Lily's sister, and resentment at unfair treatment or no, her sister is dead. I was not surprised at her knowledge, but I was surprised that she'd admit it.
9. What's the meaning of Snape's nickname in your opinion?
What sort of a question is this? Have you been to school? Or do you just find conspiracies behind every corner?
10. What do you think of the character death? Do you think s/he will return?
I thought the death itself was really silly, badly done, and in a heartbreaking way. I'm sure that will be significant. We don't even get to mourn him in this book the way we mourned Cedric in book 4, and that can't be good. It's really odd the way the book sort of simply dispatches him. It has to be significant but I don't know what the meaning is. I think that this really is the source of my dissatisfaction with the last few chapters, and thereby my inability to find peace with the book itself.
I am so attached to this character that I cannot allow myself to think that they are not dead or will not return. Better to make my peace with it now.
11. Do you think fanfiction will be hurt by Book 5? Do you see any new pairings arising? Do you see any huge ships falling apart?
Everyone is keen on declaring the death of Sirius ships, but as someone on the Sirius/Remus ship at SCUSA said, people ship James/Lily and those two have ALWAYS been dead. I think we'll see more marauder fic, especially now that the boys are less perfect. Definitely more Snapefic, and Harry/Snape even though I think the whole "Severus is secretly in love with Harry and is only mean to him to toughen him up" trope is pretty much dead. Pairings with Luna Lovegood and among the adults in the Order. Even more angsty Sirius/Remus fic. Harry/Draco may dim a little, but only because it was so overwhelmingly dominant that it had no where to go but down. I hope for more Seamus/Dean as they had tons of subtext and larger roles in the book, which was everything I could have asked for.
12. What was your favourite chapter in Order of the Phoenix? Why?
I'm only just now rereading. I couldn't possibly say.
13. Talk about Fred and George's "flight."
Smashing. A bright note that gave me the strength, really, to keep moving forward through an otherwise very dark book. And a perfect exit for the pair. I think they are content to make hay while the sun shines, but when they have to be diligent, I have faith that they will be.
14. Give some thoughts on Ron.
Could he be more tragically beside the point? More than ever, his Quidditch triumphs made me think that he is cold, burnt toast at the end of this series. She's giving him his moments here and there, but they don't feel like a real life, poor thing.
Also, for all the criticism CC gets for essentially tossing Ron out of the Trio and replacing him with Draco, didn't JKR do the same with Neville at the end of this book? Ron goes with Luna and Ginny, and when he returns he's completely useless, but it's Neville who stands by Harry's side, even if he can't curse anyone.
15. What did you think of Dumbledore's explanation?
What a let down! Not only is Dumbledore not a very good leader, but he really told us absolutely nothing.
16. Do you feel satisfied by this book?
No, for the reasons stated above. As I make my slow way through it a second time I might change my mind, but for now, no.
17. How anxious are you now for Book 6?
Incredibly. There is no way that she will be able or inclined to whip out book 6 too quickly for us to absorb and overanalyze and make fic from it, so I'm really not worried about that. But this feels so unfinished, in a way that book 6 likely won't. So if she sticks to 12-18 months, that's fine by me. I just can't imagine she will. And I think this wait, while I don't think it will be longer, will definitely be much harder.
Birthdate thing for August 23:
Of rare beauty
knows how to adapt
likes luxury
of good health not in the least shy
tends to look down on others
self-confident
determined
impatient
wants to impress others
many talents
industrious
healthy optimism
waiting for the one true love
able to make quick decisions.
The bolded one is the only one I take issue with. I think that I can look down on others, but I hope I don't tend to.

I will say that I decided that everyone that I have slept in the same room with more than once, I have seen topless, as this is generally true. Also, I've seen Alex in a thong and that is naked enough. I said I've seen CC naked only because we keep sleeping together and I wanted a way to capture that.
