I think the difference for me is that you know my local indy isn't carrying romance as a philosophical statement, and I've heard too many stories (on romance novel blogs) about people requesting romance novels be ordered and being jeered at by hipster clerks to request them myself. It's actually an ongoing topic of conversation at places like Smart Bitches Trashy Books every Independent Bookstore Day. I think there's a way to order from an independent third party? But yeah, no romance stuff at indy bookstores is sadly incredibly common.
I mean, maybe it's that the things I'd like to do all conflict with each other. I'd like to purchase in a way that signals to big entertainment companies, "give me more of that." That usually means buying things the instant they are released, or pre-ordering, in rather specific ways. I'd like to purchase in a way that gives the most money possible to the artist. And I'd like to purchase in a way that supports independent means of distribution over corporate ones.
And then on top of that, when I listen to friends in the business have their constant freak outs about scans and downloading and all of that I feel very guilty even though I actually don't illegally download anything, and the downloaded TV shows that I get from a friend either (1) I already watched myself on my DVR and the cable that I'm paying for or (2) they're British shows I can't watch anyway, like QI.
But yeah, shit has gotten so complicated that it's sort of impossible to keep up. I guess I just have to keep that in mind and be okay with it when my friends panic about their career decisions.
