Sorry I forgot to link on DW to Tuesday night's Idol recap: no country, now that country is cool?
On Siobhan's elimination, I wonder if it wasn't that she has such a crossover with Crystal, and her fans, like me, might have been too stressed keeping Crystal in after a lukewarm reception from the judges to vote for Siobhan. Also Siobhan had had a few bad weeks and was so resistant to anything approaching coherence. You need to give me a sense of what your record would be like, sweetie. That isn't putting you in a box—that's selling yourself to me, which is what you have to do if you want me to buy you.
As for the whole boys and girls thing, I think it's much less about the usual fangirl freakout over the boys because honestly, these aren't those kind of boys. It's much more that we don't have an easily digestible diva in the mix this year, but instead a bunch of indie girls, and indie girls just don't crossover unfortunately. Lilly was right—the people who will be fans of that aren't going to be watching American Idol, for the most part.
If Crystal keeps performing well, she should be fine, especially since she'll pick up a bunch of Siobhan fans. The Sinatra songbook shouldn't be a problem as most of it was also performed by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Nancy Wilson and plenty of other jazz ladies. Heck, Nellie McKay just recorded an entire album of Doris Day covers. I mean, I'll vote, but I'm not unduly concerned.
But hey, wasn't Top Chef Masters awesome last night? I liked that even though they had a "high stakes quickfire" that meant the quickfire winner automatically advanced, the chef who won that was second in the elimination round and therefore would have advanced anyway.
