The boxing thing was sort of silly, though I always do like me some Lampley. First song Clive's choice, second song their coronation song choice, third song their own choice. My god, the judges are just useless at this point, aren't they?

  • D.Cook
    1. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." I liked this better than small David, but I think that it's a less iconic song. It wasn't like, the full on David Cook experience, except for the
    2. "Dream Big." Wait, a pretty good pop song? Really? Like, something that could be in a crappy movie soundtrack under the "working your way to the top" montage? Well, go Idol! And we actually got a sense of what the hell David Cook's going to sound like on the radio.
    3. "The World I Know." I think what David Cook is doing, which is very smart, is showing everyone what his record is going to sound like. It was great, really fantastic. Paula was right, he was totally standing in his truth.

    1. "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me." This is mean? But I kept hearing George Michael in my head, and like, he was a lot better. That said, I'm just not into the thing that small David is giving me, so I'm probably going to be kind of, "well, that was a lot of okay" about it.
    2. "In This Moment." Am I the only one who thought that Archuleta sounded pretty weak on that one?
    3. "Imagine." Okay so first, I really hate this song. (Sorry, Blake.) But I do love how he skipped the "imagine no religion" verse.

As I think almost all of us have said since at least the first week of the semis if not before, small David is the person that the entire machine has really been built to find—it was always his to lose. I've been voting for David Cook since the first week of the semis, and while I'd love him to win I'm not willing to put money on this one. If he wins, amazing. If Archuleta wins, then Idol found the person they were looking for and that's really fine too—as Randy said, Archuleta really is what the show is all about, and we can't fault them at this point for restating that. What's more remarkable is that, like last season, or the season before, someone like Cook, or Blake, or Daughtry, could get so far in the competition by not being what the show is all about.

Like the rest of the season, the voting comes down to blocks. In some ways, what happened on the stage doesn't mean much. It wasn't how well they did, but what they did. They both presented themselves as exactly what they are, and you either want the earnest rocker, or the earnest balladeer. Your pick, America, and I promise I won't hold it against you.

And now I'm going to watch me some Ruben.

[Poll #1191250]

I voted for Cook, which should be no surprise.
