Let me start by saying that there is only one thing about the elimination show that I actually like, and that's the group sing, because when they do the cracktastic medleys it's like the bestest 70's variety show throwback. So this singing just the one super sincere sappy song doesn't work for me. Thank god for Elliott, and Ryan talking about his mom (whom Ryan LOVED, my god, they had a whole THING season 5) and Elliott sounded fantastic. We love him.

Mariah I dunno, sounded like Mariah, whatever. Dress was a little short and kinda 1992, and like, not like she doesn't have the body for it, and not like she's ever really been classy, but jesus, start dressing like an adult. But don't lose the wind machine.

Ah, the week of 7 George Huff Memorial Elimination. If you're new to Idol, which David Archuleta clearly is not, check my entry last year on how this goes. And by the way, if you ever feel bitchy about the way an elimination goes down, please, blame NIGEL, not RYAN. Ryan's just the mouthpiece.

So of course David sits down like Bo. OF COURSE. Even small David knows that's the pimp move. And the crowd, watching D.Cook and Syesha trading places knows which way this particular breeze is blowing. (Personally, I could not believe that Jason was in the bottom three anyway.) Ryan gives him hints, but small David merely moves to the middle of the stage, and D.Cook sits next to him, and everyone is like, "fuck you, Nigel Lythgoe."

What was sad about that elimination was that Brooke was so sure she was going home, and I feel like she was thinking "well fuck, if I'd gone home last week at least I would have been able to go to the wedding!" And yeah, I was surprised it was KLC, and glad that I don't have to listen to her bullshit her way through some song from Phantom, or taunt Simon when he's already going to be in a bad mood. But for another year we get a solid top six, and the rest of the eliminations will be sad. Many cookies awarded this week!

I want to feel like the sing out to Simon was funny, but I just feel like it was a continuation of her ridiculous bullshit re him. All these girls are a little too concerned with gaining his approval, which really isn't the point. You can't think, what will Simon want, because with a few exceptions, what Simon wants is for you to not suck. That's pretty much it. And when you stop sucking, then he wants you to be good, and when you're good he wants you to be great. And he wants you to want to be great. So, just, let it go.

As for Top Chef tonight: Chef Ryan, omg, shut the FUCK UP. Like, enough already!

I'm satisfied with the Top 6. I was IMing my friend [livejournal.com profile] heather11483 and, not having seen the previous year's Top 7 elimination show, told her, "Whichever group Small David goes to is the safe group." But then Ryan did the "we've got too many cooks in this group" and sent D.Cook to the other side, and then called out Small David, and apparently freaked him out by telling him to pick the group he thought he belonged in so he SAT DOWN (which made me laugh). And D.Cook moving over and sitting down next to him was priceless. Of course, I'm still loving some D.Cook :P I'm really a bit surprised that Carly made it through, as she's been in the bottom 3 a couple of times, but I missed the whole show Tuesday night so I don't know how well she did Mariah's interpretation of Harry Nilssen's Without You. (Funny how that has somehow become a Mariah Carey song, eh?:)

Brooke made me laugh when she said, "Hey!" when Simon predicted KLC would be going home. Because she was totally being a nanny the way she just automatically said, "Hey!" to "Maybe Kristy, your time is up" as if one of her toddler charges had been asked who he thought were uglier and he said, "Kristy!" And then when Simon said, "Well, it has to be ONE of you," she switches into, "I know."

I didn't find KLC's sing out to Simon endearing at all. I think because she's so kept herself in the game based on things that I feel are really rancid. I hate it when people talk about Simon being "too hard" or "too mean" like Carly said because he was absolutely right--look, if I nitpick it means I think you can be GOOD.

That might also have been a holdover from how I was mildly annoyed with the whole joke about "what's the difference between..." with the different adjectives Simon uses for peoples' performances--from that woman on the phone. Because in fact, all those adjectives are different and are always spot on when he says them and should make perfect sense to a performer. They were just also impossible to explain quickly unless Simon pointed out that they were self-explanatory (cruise ship=the kind of singing you'd hear on a cruise ship, karaoke=it's like listening to someone perform at a karaoke bar...). It's like I remember when people were once ranting about Mia Michael's made-up words when she critiqued people because she called Sabra a "little Ailey girl."

Chef Ryan was such a stupid turd last night. Guess he got his come-uppance, though, eh? Dork. He totally deserved to be voted off, for being pretentious and snobby about tailgating.

I thought it was a funny question because I love it when people call out Simon on his little tics, but at the same time definitely a pointless one as you rightly point out.

The "Well, it has to be ONE of you" was so cute because he was like, "what do you want me to say?" and it was a moment where Simon was like, "I'm not actually mean, you know!"

He totally deserved it! Look at how Dale and Richard embraced that challenge, and they've often been sort of snobby about things. Ryan was sooooo dumb.

I'm excited that so far the eliminations have been very equal men and women, and Stephanie and Antonia are very much holding their own—one of them is almost always in the top three.

I keep meaning to do a post about Idol because every week, it kills me. I find out who got eliminated the same day they screen the first night over here, so I know who's gone before they even sing. I think this is a good thing because otherwise I'd be a basket case for the elimination show (which is friday night here).

So, I think this week was really mean. To have David Cook stand in the wrong group at first, which he would obviously have thought meant he was in the bottom three, and then ask small David to pick a group... didn't like it much. I know they have to draw it out and I know Ryan is just doing what he's told, but it's mean anyway. I love small David so much, that he just plonked himself in the middle of the stage and refused to pick one group or the other. And then when Ryan made it clear which group was safe, it seemed like none of 'em got it :))

I've fallen a little bit in love with David Cook, truth be told. When he was in the top 24, he did nothing for me, but over the weeks I've grown to adore him. I'm calling a double David finale, with David C winning. Fingers crossed, anyway. I am happy with the final 6 bar Syesha, who I cannot stand. I kinda wish Michael was there instead, although I've never thought he was going to win it....

You need to post about idol! or at least reply here, as I totally demand that. ^_^

You should click through to my extensive discussion on the top 7 eliminations, because Nigel has done this for FIVE YEARS IN A ROW. Since season 3, the final seven are arranged into a top 3, a bottom 3, and a person who has to choose. Archuleta, being a huge Idol fan, knew that it would go that way, and I'm sure that once the other two boys were sent out knew that he would be the one doing the choosing, and in fact his sitting down on the stage was an homage to Bo in season 4, who did the same thing.

I don't think that D.Cook thought for a second that he was in the bottom three, particularly, ironically as it turned out, that he was with Kristy and Jason was with Carly. I think Jason and Carly thought they were in the bottom three, and as soon as D.Cook and Syesha traded places everyone knew which way the wind was blowing, including the audience.

David-David finale looks like the surest bet, and the girls are looking very weak suddenly. I'll be very interested to see who survives Andrew Lloyd Webber. If D.Cook is smart, he'll sing a Che song from Evita, but I would lay odds that Archuleta will go for Dreamcoat.

This is the first season I've been able to watch for three years; last season never screened in Oz, and the one before was Taylor Hicks and he'd already won by the time it started (and for some stupid reason, they were screening the show early on a Saturday afternoon) so I didn't watch it all the way through. So I'd forgotten about the whole stage thing!

I agree that small David will go for a Joseph song (Any dream will do?) but I can't pick David C. I think he could do an awesome version of Phantom of the Opera, or perhaps something from Jesus Christ Superstar?

I also agree the girls are pretty weak now, compared to the boys. I adore Brooke, but her voice doesn't suit every song and it's not the strongest of the lot. I'm hoping Syesha goes this week, but I've hoped that every week since the final 12. As for Carly, I kinda don't like her - I think she has a strong voice, but she has this whole demure act going on and it's totally fake, and it annoys the hell outta me when she does it.

I'll find out ahead of time who sings what and who gets eliminated, and I'm kinda glad because when I was not being spoiled? It killed me to watch the elimination shows! I'll be seriously, seriously pissed if David C is eliminated... would you please vote for him for me this week? I'm sure the calls are free in the US (unlike Oz and the UK), so if they are, I'd love it if you would. Thanks ♥

I've been voting for D.Cook pretty much every week, so I can't imagine I won't vote for him this week. The calls are free and we can also text, which is what I do.

I know, it's terrible, but I really can't stand Phantom at all, it's far too melodramatic for me, and I hope that no one sings anything from it. I'd rather that D.Cook do something rocking than something drama llama because I don't think he's that kind of singer.

I like Syesha fine—it was KLC I had no time for—but if Brooke doesn't pick it up we'll have an all-boy final three and that's never happened.
