Sep. 18th, 2007 05:32 pmI'm working on a drabble for the Tudor costume but until then, please enjoy My Summer of Love, seven little chapters about the week Ryan spent in Europe between the Concert for Diana and Eva Longoria's wedding. Includes Simon in costume, Elton John giving Ryan a new nickname, Ryan dressed like a Cuban street hustler, an in-person phone call, Il Divo failing to show up, Ryan finally getting Simon into a pair of jeans that fit, and a day in a Parisian hotel, along with other assorted conversations and lots of romcom references. It's a story I'm rather fond of that I think got lost in the Labor Day weekend/early term shuffle.
On the emmys themselves: I thought Jon Stewart did a great job hosting the Oscars two years ago. The ratings weren't great and neither were the reviews, but he got the job again this year, which I'm really excited about. I note this to say, I'm not too worried about Ryan's reviews for the show, or even the ratings, for lots of reasons; I won't get all media industry insider wonky on you about that, though.

Date: 2007-09-18 11:12 pm (UTC)Second, unlike all the other actor-oriented award shows, there are no movie stars at the Emmys and they're not part of the "march to the Oscars" that the SAGs and the (hostless) Globes are.
Third, opposite the show this year was the Pats-Chargers Sunday Night Football game, which basically flattened the Emmys by bleeding away all the guys. I think that's really the biggest reason for the decline v. year ago.
Fourth, the buzz seems to be that Seacrest was a game pro for stepping in at the last minute (I mean, Jesus, they announced him as the host in August and they just announced Stewart for a show that airs in March) but that they had bad writers for him and a bad flow that led to a boring show. I am not sure what Emmys these people have been watching, as it is always boring. You should either have nothing but awards and then everyone go home, like the Globes, or you should put in a pile of montages like the Oscars. The Emmys haven't really known what to do since so many award winning shows started coming from cable. Still looking for a host in August is the sign of a troubled production.
It was really only could Ryan save the show from itself, which he couldn't, mostly because he wasn't producing it. Of course, Fox censoring everything is much more the buzz than whether Ryan sucked; Ryan was fairly absent. And people are making fun of Ryan mostly because people like making fun of Ryan. I mean, the odd thing about everything he's doing is my god, he's still really young and as he said on Larry King his future is in production. This is just host-for-hire shit to keep his name out there. I think it's much cooler that they thought to ask him, really, than anything else. I bet he'll still get a lift.
But mostly? Jon Stewart got bad reviews two years ago, the ratings weren't great, and he just got asked to do it again. So I'm not sure any of it matters that much anyway.

Date: 2007-09-19 02:47 am (UTC)Oh yay!
I thought Ryan did a respectable job. I think the big problem was that people were expecting comedy, which is not exactly Ryan's forté. He was professional, made a few jokes, and generally kept the show moving along. Honestly, I was far more disappointed by the in-the-round seating and Fox's horrible censoring than by Ryan's performance.
