Can I get an amen for Barry Gibb who can still hit all those high notes in "Stayin' Alive" at his age? Also, yay for Ryan's stubble and time nazi ways. I love it when he directs from the floor; it's like a fetish.

  1. Melinda
    • "Love You Inside and Out." I really love this song; always have. She was great, but she didn't really rise above the made-for-light-rock-radio vibe of this song.
    • "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" First, that is one of the ugliest dresses I have ever seen. Where are the Gayles? Melinda unfortunately chose two very similar songs and this was just sort of boring in that PBS pledge drive special kind of way (though that might have been more the lighting) so thank goodness at the end she tried to soul that shit up. Also? Way too much arrangement there.

  2. Blake
    • "You Should Be Dancing." This is one of my favorite Bee Gees songs. I can see why he wanted to do this song but he really should have taken it down a step because his falsetto isn't that strong. Singing along with the horn section totally worked; doing the little yeah-ah-ah-ah thing, not so much. But I definitely didn't hate it like the judges did.
    • "This Is Where I Came In" I liked it. Simon, whatever. I worry that Simon just doesn't get it on a fundamental level, as Ryan implied. I mean, the man hates punk so whatever.

  3. Lakisha
    • "Stayin' Alive"Paula was totally right, the slow down to midtempo didn't do her any favors and she didn't sound great and like, whatever.
    • "Run to Me" I thought that was also really boring.

  4. Jordin
    • "To Love Somebody." That was really quite good, if a little slow. Certainly better than anyone else tonight.
    • "Woman in Love" She is going absolutely nowhere. But Simon was totally right that she sounded pageanty.
So no one was awesome tonight, and I'm pretty disappointed.

Ya know, I really never thought I'd feel compelled to define my perfect man as a stubbly time nazi, AND YET. Oh, Ryan Seacrest, the things you do to me! He was extra-awesome tonight.

Simon, whatever. I worry that Simon just doesn't get it on a fundamental level, as Ryan implied.

I am totally inclined to agree with you right there. He just . . . doesn't.

Also! Your Rymon poll questions light up my life. :D

When he's really earning his money there is nothing sexier. When he was up on stage and was trying to get the camera off Simon and so was all "Cut back to me!" *snap* Like, OMG. He always wants to be simultaneously the ultimate backstager AND the face of the show, and he pulls it off every single week.

Yay! I'm SO pleased that you like the questions!

Looooved Jordin last night, and I still don't know what sort of problem the judges had with the second song. Maybe I'm totally tone deaf, but I did not hear A TON OF PITCHYNESS. I just didn't. Maybe they're too scared to go to the "shouting" area, since that's how they're trying to get rid of Lakisha, but I heard, more than anything, that maybe she was bit TOO loud in some places.

And Melinda still hasn't won me over. Blake was only okay tonight, I looooooove him totally, love him, but it wasn't the best, and it would've been good to have one song beatboxed up, and one song straight.

And oh god, leave Lakisha. I like her fine, and I think she has a nice voice, but I need her gone.

On a happier note, I love Simon's face when Ryan starts the date line...and his face sort of falls and then at the end she smiles and chuckles. But for a second there I was like "shite."

Jordin was a little sharp in all of those big notes in the second song, actually. Not horrifically, but it all gave the impression of a performance that wasn't completely under her control. I liked Blake's second song a lot, actually. I love Melinda but she wasn't doing it for me this week.

My incoherent thoughts... in no particular order:

d. Simon's t-shirt: Gahh! Over 40, it's really time to start dressing like an adult. Or in his case, dressing. Period.

a. I actually said "Shut the fuck up, Randy!" out loud when he made that "You don't have to beat box everything, man" comment to Blake. Yeah, dawg, because God forbid a contestant should honestly convey what his album will sound like.

c. There was barely time for the judges comments, but plenty of time for those stupid viewer questions-- and let's face it, they're stupid fluff because they're never gonna air questions like "LaKisha, have you ever observed Ryan and Simon making out?" or "Blake, would you consider a relationship with Chris?"-- and face time for Judge Judy? Judge Judy? WTF?

b. I am s o o o over Melinda's "I'm a Little Teapot" motion she does while singing.
