Back to reality
Aug. 30th, 2006 07:54 pmWell, the end of August was quite a whirlwind and I'll probably have to break it up a bit. First, thank you to everyone for their birthday wishes! I had a wonderful day. A big gang hung out at the Shake Shack, a little hamburger place in Madison Square Park, from early evening until night. Rach and Moony came in from out of town, which, a billion thanks, and I even got presents which I completely wasn't expecting. I was lucky to get the last good weather for a while and the evening was just gorgeous.
On Friday Ali and I got up early, got a car, and drove up to my mother's house in Maine. It certainly was eventful—we blew a tire on the way up!—but also relaxing and full of food: bagels, pasta with chicken, Italian sandwiches (the food I miss most from home), waffles, sliced ripe tomatoes with salt, horseradish cheddar cheese and crackers, steamed clams, fresh corn, fried green tomatoes, leftover waffles with plums, scrambled eggs with the leftover horseradish cheddar, roast beef sandwiches, ham, scalloped potatoes, more fresh corn, squash pie, chips and onion dip, cottage cheese pancakes, lobster rolls, baked beans, red hot dogs, canned brown bread, even more fresh corn, more fried green tomatoes. Wow. Lots of food.
We went dancing at an 80s night with my pal A and later my mom told me it was the same bar/club that my sister hung out at when she was the hippest hairdresser in town thirty years ago! Ah, Portland, you never change. I also brought my schoolbooks down from the attic so Mother can send them to me if I need them, and brought a few home.
While I was gone Val house-and-cat-sat for me which was pretty sweet. I'm doing the purge the fridge thing right now, and hurrah for bringing home some leftovers. Anyway I didn't have to feed myself much yesterday, as S took me out to a business lunch (excellent) and Josh and Cassie got me dinner for packing their kitchen.
And then today, classes started! I'm a student again! This semester is going to kick my ass but in a good way, I hope. I think I need a student icon, hrm.
