jlh: Neil Finn playing a guitar (music: Neil Finn)

I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] andstillitmoves for that there music meme. I have friends who are musicians so call me old fashioned but I'm not comfortable putting the files up on an open post. I can't upload half of them anyway.

Anyway, it's summer, and in the summer I want pop and rock. I want those songs of the summer you're going to listen to when you're in the car going to the beach, or when you're cruising around in the evenings with the windows rolled down.
  1. Nick Lachey, "What's Left of Me". Real life drama aside, it's a superior pop song and feels so summery, in the tinkling piano with the synths in the background. And for all its pop sheen, it's a remarkably mature song lyrically.
I don't wanna spend another day trapped in the shadow of my mistakes
  2. Snow Patrol, "Hands Open". I just bought the new CD and this is the song that immediately stuck out as destined for road trips all summer long.
I want to hear you laugh like you really mean it / Collapse into me tired with joy
  3. Keane, "Is It Any Wonder?" Bought on the same day as Snow Patrol and wow, loving this record as well. It's so different from the first one and fun to hear the band opening up and getting more of an edge.
Is it any wonder I don't know what's right?
  4. Fiona Apple, "O' Sailor." Love her, so much, and I'm still listening to this CD all the time even if it came out a few months ago and I'd had the bootleg about a year ago (which was late).
I have too been playing with fifty-two cards.
  5. Christina Aguilera, "Ain't No Other Man." What's fascinating about this song is how spare the arrangement is; most of the time it's just Christina and the beat, with those amazing horns chiming in like a call and response. But her voice is so fucking big, she don't need no guitar or piano, thanks.
You got what I want boy and I want it so keep on giving it up!
  6. Porno Graffiti, "Melissa," from Full Metal Alchemist. It was on a mix of anime J-Pop that [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose made for me and I'm really loving this song and that whole mix right now. It apparently has its own fanlisting. ETA: Thanks, Ali, for giving me the name and lyrics!
Come on, pierce through my chest made anxious by love
  7. The Irreverends, "Deuterotomy Blues." To be honest, I've been listening to a lot of this song, because it's by C's band and I might be singing back up on it. But since it's a demo, I can't share it with you … yet.

I love that new Christina Aguilera song! It's a great combo of Motown and modern pop and her voice is just fantastic - one of my new favorite songs :D

I used to have a few Fiona Apple songs somebody recorded for me - she has such a gorgeous voice.

I haven't heard any of the songs on your list. Am so out of the loop.

She's great, I just love her songwriting, and I would be more than happy to get all three albums out to you.

Her sister Maude Maggart (Apple is Fiona's middle name) also has a lovely voice and sings standards so you might want to check her out as well.

*flaps* Seriously? That would be fantastic! What do I need to do?

Oddly, I did know Fiona's surname, because I was that big of a geek about the t.v. show The Sentinel waybackwhen, which co-starred her brother (half brother?) I didn't know she had a singing sister, though. By 'standards' you mean...er?

I can either YSI it all to you, or I can put the MP3s on a CD and send them to you.

By standards I mean the American Songbook, you know, Berlin and Gershwin and Porter and that sort of thing.
