Okay, some of you know that my closest buddy is C____. Well, C____ was annoyed that I did a whole entry about my weekend with P____ (whom he of course knows) but I haven't spoken of C____. I would point out that the earlier entry in which I referred to my best friend being a straight man was of course about C____ (it's under the quiz result where I'm Lily).
Yes, in spite of extensive fag hag credentials, the person closest to me in this universe is actually a straight man that I have not slept with, am not sleeping with, and do not plan to sleep with. Not that he is not completely adorable and sexy. I mean, he's a rock star. Literally.
Right, so all about C____:
--We met at a math meet when he was 10 and I was 11, but we weren't friends right away. (His team won; my team came in second or third or something respectable like that.) There exists, someplace in our small town newspaper's archives a photo of this auspicious occasion. (And by small town paper, I mean a weekly free paper distributed at the supermarket that lists the honor roll and whose granddaughter visited town from Boston for the 50th anniversary party.)
--We grew up in the same small town, and some of his uncles went to school with my (much older) brother and sister. This meant that if said siblings were around when C____ would come over to my house, we would always have the same conversation: "Are you Gary's kid or Danny's kid?", to which C____ would reply, through clenched teeth, "I'm GARY'S kid". Ah, life in a small town. Don't you love it? (C____'s comment: "No, actually.")
--We became close friends in early high school. C____ is brilliant, of course, so even though he's a year younger than me, he was in all my math and science classes. Plus, we had school band together He plays the drums. We are very different. How we came together we don't know, but we can handle each other better than almost anyone else. He is my oldest close friend, certainly, and one of my oldest friends, period.
--It was soon after this that we began to refer to each other as siblings. This metaphor is probably most apt, and it made for easy explanation when I went to college. Thus was avoided all the "why aren't you going out?" questions that we HATED. (And yet, I'm an H/H shipper. Just call me a hypocrite. I can take it.)
--Our first big fight was about whether, upon the release of The Joshua Tree, U2 had sold out. We probably still disagree about this, but then, C____ is much more punk than I am. Then again, as suck.com famously said, it's hard to be quite so punk rock when you own expensive furniture.
--Our relationship is based on riding around in cars on roadtrips to nowhere in particular, listening to good music and singing at the top of our lungs. We are both good singers, and our voices blend very well. We rock!
--I meant it when I said C____ is a rock star. He's the drummer in an up-and-coming band that had a well-attended record release party recently. They rock!
--Did I mention that I love him? Can you tell? And he loves me, which comes in handy.
Okay, so enough about C____. For a future sequel to EWFS, I'm looking for songs, etc. about Superman or heroes to use as epigrams. So far I have:
--"Pocket Full of Kryptonite"-Spin Doctors
--"Supernova"-Liz Phair
--"Superman"-REM (though I know that was a cover)
--"83"-John Mayer
--There's a new Dave Matthews song I heard part of the other day where he sings "I am no superman". Anyone have the title?
--"Heroes"-David Bowie
--"Kryptonite"-3 Doors Down
--"Superman (It's Not Easy)"--Five for Fighting
Any suggestions? Please leave a comment.
I changed my layout; I think it goes better with the picture of Cary.
