some shippy thoughts
Sep. 23rd, 2002 12:50 amSo, as I said before, it's been an H/D sort of week. And I'm thinking, that might not be good for me. I read Resolution today as well, so that's five H/D chapters and/or fics this week, since I haven't read Ali's yet. That's a lot, especially for one who isn't a big G&H head.
Then later this evening I read the really quite good "Getting Closer to Fine" by Mary G, a post-H H/H that takes the form of a police procedural. There's a format not usually seen--with very few exceptions (Snitch! is the only one coming to mind at the moment) we don't see Aurors, or Harry, as run-of-the-mill cops. The parallel is usually more of the Jack Ryan/Superspy variety, or maybe something FBI-like. But this fic reminded me of Faye Kellerman in its hints of departmental politics, giving Harry a partner (Dean, and always good to see him developed, of course) and a captain (Moody) to play off, plus a romance going on in the background. I sunk right down into it, gladly, and before you say it: no, it wasn't particularly sweet or fluffy in its H/H-ness.
Then I remembered--I'm writing H/H. And while I really like reading good H/D, I don't love it for itself. I had been feeling rather bad about not yammering more on the Armchair, about not having read a long list of things Aja or others have rec'd. Then last night someone who shall remain nameless said, "I don't read fanfic" and I thought, you know, now that there's so much of it, and I'm writing, I can be more choiceful and not feel so guilty about not having read anything. I mean, I certainly don't think that everyone that meets me needs to run out and read my fic--and I'm generally pleasantly surprised when they do.
I had thought that the relatively lower amount of H/H that I read compared to the H/D was because I am not sailing on the Pumpkin Pie (they move too fast and are generally too squee-ish for me; the only ship I feel that way about is S/D). But I'm not on the G&H, either. So I think it's just the people I know on LJ, so many of whom are H/D types. The rec's I get are H/D. Plus, a lot of S/D types are H/D (like
misscora or sort of
thezeppo).
So I'm off to cull through all those back Chapter Owls in the search for good H/H, and when I find them I'll tell you all about it. I'm considering the 5/6/7th year H/D slot on my dance card to be full (would that be the Fox Trot? or the Tango?). Enough of the Draco-worries-about-Lucius stuff. I'm kinda over it, and I'm glad I dealt with it the way I did so I wouldn't have to have Draco mooning about it all the time.
Meanwhile, the sequel to EWFS whispered in my ear all day today. Which is somewhat related to all this H/H and H/D-ness, but of course I'm not going to tell you how at this juncture. ^_^
