So, like, you guys? How awesome was the last episode? How sad are we that there's no new episodes until the fall? How glad am I that Six Feet Under starts in two weeks and will carry me through the summer? How sad am I to not read that first sentence at the start of Couch Baron's recaps until September?

Other than just the high quality of the show itself and the pleasure of the viewing experience itself, I think the most amazing thing for me about Veronica Mars was being in on the beginning of a cultural event, which is something I haven't been since I got on LJ.

But when I saw the preview for VM at the UPN presentation last May I was intrigued, and when I saw the first episode in September I called CC and said, "I've found your new show." How proud I am to have been right in that assessment. How fun it was to watch the people following the show slowly grow as the season went on, not only on LJ but in the country. How happy I was to see the good reviews and the press and UPN buying the show for the full year and then renewing it early. How hopeful I am that Kristen Bell will be at least nominated, if not win, an Emmy for her work this fall. (Jason and Enrico, too!)

Thanks, slaverat; it was a great ride. See you in September!

Your brain: 160% interpersonal, 80% visual, 140% verbal, and 20% mathematical!
Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.

Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the following advice, which I think is obvious:

  1. Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 80%.
  2. Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 100%.
  3. Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.

The only quibble I have with this is, again, it's about what I prefer, not like, what I'm good at or what I know. I mean, I did well on my Calculus AP exam. I tested out of college math. I think I liked math and science because I was pretty good at them, and I could understand them. I just have found that ultimately, I'm more interested in people and their behavior than in things and how they work or look. Which is no value judgment as if other people weren't more interested in things and how they work we wouldn't have any things that work, and if other people weren't more interested in things and how they look we wouldn't have any pretty. So yay for difference!

Being as unspoilery as I can, Enrico rocked the house last night. I mean, I loved him already, but he got to use so much more range last night that I was just really, really impressed and glad.

I'll be very interested to see what Ely's scores are, should she take this. I am entertained that you and I have flipped scores on everything, though.

Verbal: 140% 160%
Mathematical: 20% 80%

...I have too much time on my hands. :))

All that effort to get it looking just right, and LJ strips out my spaces. Grr. Anyway, your scores on the left, mine on the right. :D

So now it's over I think it would be a diplomatic time to ask the following question;

What is this show and would I like it?

Channel 4 are usually pretty current in terms of American programming, and we are working through season 1 of Desperate Housewives at the minute, but as yet Veronica Mars has not reared its head. We want more American programming! We cry out for badly recut commercial breaks when you least suspect them!

Random drive-by comment; should you have Sky TV, I heard a rumour that Veronica Mars is coming to Sky One at random unspecified near-future point- this year sometime.

Desperate Housewives was a huge hit right out of the box so I'm not surprised that it's already on Channel 4. Veronica Mars is on a smaller American network, and it was a slow starter. I still wouldn't call it a big hit, but it's definitely holding its own so they may bring it over.

Veronica Mars is a sophomore at a high school just south of San Diego, CA. Neptune is the kind of beach town that has only two kinds of people: the really rich (called "oh-niners" after their zip code) and the working class (which includes a Hispanic motorcycle gang headed by a guy named Weevil). Her best friend Lilly and her boyfriend Duncan are the kids of software developer Jake Kane whose company is making millions off streaming video and for whom many of the people in town work. Her best friend's boyfriend Logan is the son of movie stars. Her dad Keith (that's him in the icon) is the sheriff.

That is, until Lilly is found with her head bashed in by the side of the Kane's pool. Keith suspects Jake but has no proof; he is widely suspected of bungling the investigation and the town kicks him out of office. The new sheriff pins the crime on a drifter and a trial places him on death row, where he's refusing all appeals. Duncan broke up with Veronica, with no warning, just a week before Lilly died. Veronica's mom leaves town. Trying to stay in with her oh-niner friends despite her father's fall from grace, Veronica goes to a party where she is slipped a roofie and wakes up with her panties across the floor from her.

We open near the start of Veronica's junior year. Keith is now a PI and the ever-loyal Veronica helps with his investigations. She has a new best pal, Wallace, whom she rescued from a run-in with Weevil's gang. She's ostracized from the oh-niners; Logan thinks she's a traitor to Lilly's memory and goes out of his way to torment her; Duncan never speaks to her. She's gone from being a sweet naive kid on the pep squad to a tough girl whose after school job is taking photos of cheating husbands. In between helping her father and solving mysteries for her own fellow-student clients she's trying to find her mother and solve her best friend's murder.

And yes, we learn all of the above in the first episode. Not a single spoiler there. And, as the creator-exec producer Rob Thomas promised, Lilly Kane's murder is solved at the end of the season.

Would you like it? Well, there's the ongoing Lilly Kane mystery plus a mystery of the week each week, which sometimes but not always gives you clues for Lilly's murder. It's intricately plotted and incredibly well paced with tons of character development even though the plot moves forward at a pretty quick pace. It's less snarky and a little more emotional than Buffy, which is why I like it, but Cassie also loves it and many Buffy fans have embraced it. I'd say, give it a try through the second or third episode (as the start is so exposition-heavy). I bet you'll be hooked!

DVDs are out in September, worst case. I plan on buying them and forcing them on everyone I know who isn't already watching.
