Tonight I'm thankful for my friend S, with whom I had dinner tonight. She and I were roommates in college (we met in our freshman composition class) and worked together at the library. Then she went off to Prague and I went off to Philadelphia; she was the first person I emailed on a regular basis. (It was early days, 1992, but she was working at a tech company and I was at graduate school.) What we shared then was being alone in an unfamiliar city, having as she said "no one who loves you on the other side of the wall." She moved to New York two years after I did to go to graduate school and we've been palling around ever since. She's a great, great friend and I love her very much.
