I got a heart full of soul.
Mar. 18th, 2004 02:39 pmTuesday and Wednesday are all about reality TV for me, man. On Tuesday I have American Idol/America's Next Top Model/Queer Eye, and on Wednesday I have American Idol/Nick & Jessica. I'm so unscripted, man.
On American Idol we're in the finals, folks, so I've decided to yammer about it here. Also,
tromboneborges has been off wandering the earth so I wasn't able to yammer about it in YM to him, as I have done for the last few weeks. I am finding, as time goes on, that I often agree with Simon; I just would have been nicer about it. But I think that people respond better to a combination of positive and negative feedback, don't you?
Non-spoilery:
I have a crush on Jon Peter Lewis, like the rest of the audience. He is a w00bie thing.
I think Matthew Rogers is gay. It hit me when they showed him playing football, then they showed him in the bubble bath, and he suddenly reminded me of John.
This week's theme was soul, and Simon said it lead to a lot of oversinging. I have to say, he's right in a way, it did. But also, contests like AI don't really reward restraint, and look who these kids are modeling themselves after: Whitney, Christina, Mariah. Not exactly models of restraint, there.
The thing I love about the results show is the little group number medley that the kids do because it's so dorky and variety-show from the 60s. LOVE IT. I also am very impressed how well the six teenage contestants are holding up under all this pressure.
LaToya: "Ain't Nobody". I have to say, I really love this song, and she did a perfectly fine, solid job, and she moved around well. I think she'll last as long as she does well, but I don't think she's connecting or has much of a different personality, so one bad performance or poorly chosen song and she's out.
Amy: "You Make Me Feel Brand New". I missed it because I was on the phone, so I can't say much except the little clips and she didn't sound great. It's also sort of a boring wedding song. I think she could have chosen a lot better.
Matthew: "Hard to Handle". He was okay. Not as good as Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes, but okay. I was mostly thinking, "Oh my God, he's gay" and I don't really like that song all that much, so.
Camille: "Son of a Preacher Man". A deceptively tricky song. You think Dusty is just whispering, but that's because Dusty always sounds like that; there's a lot of power in her husky voice. Camille didn't really have that.
♥ Jon: "Drift Away". (I had forgotten he sang that ill-advised version of Tiny Dancer in the semis. Hopefully that was his one bad performance.) He sounded great but Paula was right, he needs to not get out of breath from dancing as that is lame.
Fantasia: "Signed Sealed Delivered". She OWNZ me. Simon said in the semis that she didn't need the contest at all and this is SO TRUE.
ladyjaida said that there is Fantasia, and then there is everyone else. I'm really looking forward to see how she does with the other themes.
George: "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay". He picked the perfect song, so of COURSE he sounded great, and looked perfectly at home! As with Fantasia, I'll be interested to see what he does with other genres.
Jennifer: "Baby I Love You". She did a perfectly fine job. But I just don't feel like she's trying to connect with me; she's spending her energy all on the music and not on the entertaining. I think she's going to have to work on that. I want to like her, but I find that I don't, quite.
John: "Lately". I hate to say it, but his voice sounded really odd. I think he chose the wrong song. He started singing sitting on a stool and I didn't like that either, as it played up his Vegas-y mannerisms and he really should be trying to play that down a little. Didn't work for me.
Leah: "You Keep Me Hanging On". I wonder if she'd only heard the Kim Wilde version and not the Supremes one. She stood there like a scared little pop tart in her hipster jeans and cropped top and she didn't sound all that great. But, I'm not a big fan of hers anyway; there's just something about her that annoys me.
Jasmine: "Inseparable". You know, I really liked it, and I hadn't thought much of her before that. She sounded great, and had a real presence. She's just an ickle cutie, and very age-appropriate, I might add.
Diana: "Think". I missed the start of Diana's semi final round so she is the one that I hadn't heard sing at all before and, WOW. She's great!
At the end Jaida and I agreed that we wouldn't know who to vote for. But they had Leah, Amy, and Jennifer in the bottom three, with Camille as a tease. I would have switched out Camille for Jennifer, but I really thought those four were the weak performances. I was struck by how annoyed both Leah and Jennifer were. I totally agree with taking Leah out but I hope Jennifer takes Paula's words about connecting with the audience to heart.
Typically, the nifty icon site is now out of bandwidth, now that I know how to get the stupid picture off the site. Colour me very annoyed.
