I'm saying this part outside the cut: Rick Tramanto and Gale Gand got divorced? I'm seriously sad about that.

Inside the cut, because the appearance of the three previous winners might be a little spoilery: Always love to see Harold (that's him in my TC icon), and from his blog we now know that eating Richard's food at this challenge led him to seek out Richard's restaurant in Atlanta, which he was at not long ago. His advice to "cook your own flavors" reminds me why his season of Top Chef is still my favorite season of reality television ever. Ilan will always look ridiculous in the company of the other winners, and while I blame his "just don't shave anyone's head" mostly on the editors, as I'm sure he said more than that, it's absurd that he even said that to begin with.

Hung, I'll talk about at the end.

Clearly the Top Chef editors need to give the eliminated cheftestants a little more time to recover themselves after their elimination to do the final interview. As soon as I saw Spike after the quickfire his shiny eyes gave him away, long before the doomed choice of frozen scallops. Dale's ego got in his way last week, but this week it was more Spike's smugness that got in his way. He was so in love with his own idea that he couldn't let it go, instead of being like, fuck these scallops. This wasn't the first time he'd let frozen product lead him to bad places—remember the steak tips from the farmer's market? That said, as soon as I saw Lisa's affect at judges' table I wished that she were going home, however much I dislike Spike, and I mourned for Dale once again.

[livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose noted that the three nicest competitors will be in the finals—Richard, Stephanie and Antonia—and that brings me back to Harold and Hung. I have a real problem with Hung's comment that they should do what they have to do to win because they aren't there to win fan favorite. I really reject that these things are opposites. Harold probably would have won fan favorite his season, had that been an award, as probably would Jay in PR1. Christian did win both in PR4, and while I found him occasionally tiresome, he was neither purposefully cruel nor needlessly negative to his fellow designers.

This is another part of that whole you need to be an asshole to be good thing, and for the last comment on that I turn to Harold's observations on Rick Tramanto in his blog this week: When I was there I got to spend some time talking to Rick. I think that we kind of come from the same school were both very low-key and very quiet. I really like Rick. I don’t know what his food philosophies are but as a person he seems pretty mild, really mild-mannered and doesn’t seem like a lunatic. The odds are pretty good that we'll get another one of those as the winner this season, and I couldn't be more excited for that.
