I have to admit, last night I was so worried about what was going to happen, and what had already been going on, regarding the elimination and a lot of other things, that I didn't really watch the show itself, but just checked in from watching Top Chef on the TIVO—sort of like watching it through my fingers. I'm watching it for the first time all the way through this morning actually.

"Reelin' In the Years" was cracktastic. I really wish the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had blurbs on these songs—not that I don't love me some Steely Dan, but I'm not sure why this song changed rock. On top of that, I'm not sure why we didn't get to hear any of the many 90s songs that are on the list. What is with the classic rock Idol, seriously? Anyway, the choreography as usual was perverse, but why on earth did they give the line "after all the things we've done and seen you find another man" to Syesha, and then change "man" to "plan"? Just give the line to Cook and be done with it, sheesh.

Adam Levine sounded in good voice but why was the the band mixed so far back—was it just that only his vocal was live? Given the set up they must have taped them earlier, not live, unless they did the phone-in questions earlier—Nigel, please to be hiding production details better. Ryan coming out and shaking many hands, very Dick Clark—he seems sort of birdlike tonight, tiny with his little chest puffed out.

OMG BO. Seriously, if you don't love Bo I don't even want to hear it. I mean, he was even wearing flared brown leather pants. I love Ryan's old-man hands-in-pockets toe-tapping dance; he looks sooo dorky in the middle of the kids. And the man hug! Oh, Bo is so honest and awesome.

I said what I wanted to say about the elimination last night, so I'll leave that, except to say that s/he seemed really happy in hir sing out, so good on hir!

I sort of love that David Cook throws as much of his musical theater background into the choreography as he can without looking like a complete dork. It's endearing. But I have to say, this year have been some of the worst group numbers in recent memory.

*gasp* YOU MEAN THEY DON'T DO EVERYONE LIVE??? OH NOES!

And we talked about the awesome that is Bo last night...he's awesome :D

This is my first season really watching Idol, and the production of the show has been discouraging. The horrifically cheesy group numbers (and last night's was a new nadir ITO choreography - hello, you have PAULA ABDUL available??), the Ford "video" that was an embarrassment to at least 2 of the contestants (especially Cookie), the padding (though I did enjoy Bo Bice and wonder how he made it to number 2, as TPTB don't seem to like rockers)... well, I think a half-hour show would just be kinder to everyone, especially the audience. I felt bad for Cookie, having that BZUH moment when that girl asked him on a blind date. As for Archie? Good grief, the boy can't speak, and the few words he manages are nowhere near as entertaining as Jason. Oy.

At its heart, this is a variety show, not really a rock show or a music show as such, so the cheesy group numbers are a big part of why I, personally, love the show because they're so retro and ridiculous. The pimpmercial of course is part of the show, as well, so even if they dropped to a half hour it would still be there, and it's always sort of silly. A half-hour show would be better, but that's more Fox's call than Idol's, so blame that on Fox's inability to develop a good sitcom. In other seasons, the results show has more often been a half hour.

I really disagree that TPTB don't like rockers. Sure, there's been overpraise of Archuleta, but they've pretty consistently at least liked Cook every week. They adored Daughtry—that elimination was a shocker and clearly Simon would have liked him to have won. Bo was really the first rocker to come on and be himself, and he got to #2 because he was fantastic and the judges saw that and loved that too. Maybe first or second season they weren't sure what to do with the rockers, but the inclusion of instruments this season I think proves the show is ready to embrace the rock.

That said, I am not really into theories of how TPTB are gaming the show and what they like or don't like, for a lot of reasons—I just don't think the show works that way. Of course, I don't think a lot of things work that way, but that might just be me.

Thanks for giving me the perspective of someone who has followed the show a long time. As a newbie I'm still getting used to how things are done on AI. It seems Simon would like DCook to win (he's actually said something to that effect publicly though not on the show, of course) so I hope he's the judge who works with Cookie next week (and I'm still trying to figure that Top 3 thing out too). I know the pimpmercials are part of the show, and some of them I have enjoyed (like the zombie one - DCook as one of the zombies was a definite D'Oh moment, while Zombie!Brooke made me scratch my head a bit). Must say I have enjoyed the contestants being allowed to play instruments.

I like to think that years from now AI's variety-showness will be seen the way old variety shows are now. Where they're so completely bizarre and yet follow their own special logic. Like, where you can't believe anybody actually did that on TV. Only with AI the conestants are clearly aware of how weird it is in a different way. Imo, anyway.
