What amazes me, as I look at the winners, is that my feelings about who should win and who will win, didn't change from when the nominees were announced a month ago. Also, and this is only a spoiler if you want to go back to that entry: Out of 24 awards, I got 19 right. Next year, you should listen to me. *nods*
The ones I got wrong: Documentary Short Subject (I had picked Asylum); Animated Short Film (Destino); Live Action Short Film (no pick)--and let me just say, I had meant to see all the shorts but the tickets sold out, so I am very bitter that I got them all wrong. I also got sound editing (Finding Nemo was my pick) and cinematography (Girl with a Pearl Earring) incorrect. Sorry, Master and Commander!
I did have some disappointments. And before you all start, look: Return of the King just tied Titanic and Ben Hur for the record for the most awards, and it won every award it was nominated for. So please don't hang me in effigy just because there are some places I would have liked something else to win. There were other excellent films made in the last three years. Thank you.
Shouldn't a film that actually takes place within a Vermeer painting, and pulls it off, win something? Art direction, Costume design and Cinematography really should have all gone to Girl with a Pearl Earring, and while the film didn't reach me emotionally, it was gorgeous. It was all about light, and the light was perfect, and I'm disappointed they didn't get at least one of them.
Love Annie Lennox, but Kiss at the End of the Rainbow is a better song, and was actually important in the film. So. But at least we got that killer performance!
I thought that LotR deserved best adapted screenplay. But as I said a month ago,
American Splendor was amazingly innovative, blending live action, animation, and documentary seamlessly, and I'm disappointed that one of my two top films of the year didn't win an award. I know those of you outside the US are just getting this movie lately, and I say, run don't walk. It was a bright spot in a pretty lousy year.
So great to have Billy back. I can understand why he doesn't want to be the guy who hosts every year, but he is the go-to guy for a reason. I'm also glad that we didn't have the usual completely random film packages. They got the whole show in only ten minutes over!
Favorite presenters--hrm, between Jack Black/Will Farrell and Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson. Whiile Alison Krauss sounded great, I thought the Mitch and Mickey was brilliant--in character! w00t to Blake Edwards, especially when he referred to his wife as "the broad with the soprano". Also, the current president of the academy wrote both Cool Hand Luke and Cat Ballou. Talk about range.
Okay, now about the dresses. How great did Scarlett Johansson look? Amazing. Also Annie Lennox, and Charlize Theron, and C Z-J always looks great. Nicole Kidman I think has set the bar so high that even when she looks smashing I think, well, I've seen her look better. Go Diane Keaton for reworking the Annie Hall thing. Doesn't Susan Sarandon just look better every year? Everyone really looked fab. And the men! mmm, Djimon. mmm, Jude. mmm, Cusack.
I am very sure, however, that Renee could not breathe. She hasn't lost all her Bridget weight, so she cinched herself within an inch of her life. It was ridiculous. She looked so wonderful at the Golden Globes, too. How very disappointing.
