Can't we all just get along? I mean, about book six, of course.

100% spoiler free, mostly because I am managing to remain so, and I don't really plan on leaving LJ until I have to, which hopefully won't be until Friday for various personal reasons.

My request is that people be kind about whoever may or may not be dying in book 6. (By the way, JKR has said a million times that there is going to be a lot more death, so saying that there will be death in book 6 isn't really a spoiler IMHO.) After Sirius died, there were a lot of people who were made fun of for being upset, and that is just not cool. Personally, I don't care that much about Snape, but [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato and [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose do, so it's not like I'm going to be posting "Happy dance that Snape died and not Seamus" if it's him that goes, because that is obnoxious and I act my age and not my shoe size.

(I realize that phrase loses something in the translation from the American, so I'll say: I am not 8 1/2 years old and I am not going to say "nyah nyah" if someone else's beloved character dies.)

By the same token, saying "my god it's just a character in a book" is ridiculous. You're the one that got the book at midnight, pally. You're in the FANDOM (or, at least, most of you are, but then those of you who aren't in the fandom are not inclined to say this shit anyway) so you are INVOLVED. Don't make fun of people who are involved but in some way that isn't exactly like the way you are involved.

I really don't get the self-centeredness and the casual disregard for other people's feelings. I know that LJ fosters that, but grow the fuck up or shut the fuck up. Those are your options.

For how long do you plan to be gone?

I'm just going to read on a filter until all the shrieking dies away.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Best case (which I doubt is possible): Off when I leave work on Friday, back sometime Saturday when I finished the book.

Likely case: Off sometime mid week, back Saturday.

Frankly, I've quit my job, my last day is Friday, and things are winding down, so it would be nice to have that to keep my mind occupied as opposed to OMG I have quit my job.

[identity profile] piperki.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Quitting your job is a great feeling. Just thinking about it gives me a case of MADSQUEE.

I wonder if I'm the only person taking my time reading the book? I figure I'll just read a couple of chapters a day, because that's all I have time for...between the job, the house, the kid, the writing--can't fit in a lot more.

Exactly, because my shoe size is 40!! ;-)
I know what you mean though, and agree completely wiht your post.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's too bad it doesn't translate as it's such a useful phrase, short and snappy and a good put down, and hey, it's in a Prince song.

Thanks!

[identity profile] misscora.livejournal.com 2005-07-10 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
But, on the other hand, 'translated from the America' would make an excellent name for a band...

As usual, my dear, you make good, sensible points.

Preach on, baby! *snogs*

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I saw your post and will follow comments with interest. Half the people I know are totally spoiled and like, I just sort of don't get it. Maybe I'm just overinvested in the integrity (such as there is) of the work, but I don't want to already know what happens.

However, Rach was just spoiled by a news site, so I'm worried that I'll have to cut myself off completely from the internet in general and even my friends until Friday. Which will make for a lonely miserable last week at work, let me tell you.

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I may just read LJ with a filter, and stick to TLC as far as news goes, and otherwise stay the hell off the internet.

As for spoilage? I mean, I want facts revealed to me the way the author intended. It's why I write crappy summaries, and why I almost never read the backs of books anymore if it's been recommended to me already.

I plan on putting any really hardcore squeeing/bitching behind a filter to those who I know will agree, if I find it necessary to do at all.

My flist has been good so far with the spoiler cuts, and I hope it stays that way once the book is out - with one thing and another, I won't be able to read it all in one go and will probably want to go online in the meantime.

Ugh, ship wars :(

*clings*

[identity profile] wednesdayschild.livejournal.com 2005-07-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
ALSO CHARACTER DEATH WARS.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-11 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean, ship wars are really tiresome and I never participate as I am only a fanon shipper, not a canon shipper. But the character death wars are just tacky. It's like, hey, annoying person who doesn't care about Sirius, if it were your precious Ron/Draco/Michael Corner, you'd be singing a different tune there, buddy.

That said, ship icon!

When are you going to Houston?

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-11 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the 27th, and I leave early on the 1st. You have my mobile number, don't you? If not I'll email it to you. I'll be in LA before that, from the 19th.

When's the book out again?

[identity profile] misscora.livejournal.com 2005-07-10 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was making plans to catch someone online to talk to them about stuff (look at me with the coherence and so-forth) next weekend and they mentioned that the only thing they planned to do then was buy the book and READ and I honestly went, 'oh, yeah, that's next weekend, too.'

I'm sooo disassociated from stuff out here.

It's sad this has to be said within fandom, but thank you for saying it!

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-11 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Dude, so sad, I mean, live and let live, peeps.

[identity profile] mahoni.livejournal.com 2005-07-10 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? I am totally self-centered when it comes to my Harry Potter experience. That doesn't mean I intend to make fun of people who get upset about something that doesn't bother me; that just means I totally do not want to hear about how stupid it is for Harry to speak in all caps, and how much of a waste of space Hagrid is, etc. Alternatively, I expect I'll once again *like* whatever Rowling does in terms of killing off characters, because I just like these books and am peculiarly, perpetually satisfied by the directions Rowling takes the story.

Therefore, I take the shut the fuck up option (I pretty much did this last time, except for a couple of comments in which I argued that Sirius' death was *not* badly written regardless of how sad it was to lose him. No, I'm not brave, just really stupid).

And I'm actually taking it one step further this time around: read no commentary about the book on LJ. All the ranting about OotP made me so sad, and made me feel really dumb for just plain *enjoying* the book, and nothing is going to spoil it for me this time, because YAY HARRY POTTER! <3 <3 <3

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2005-07-11 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's totally valid. I mean, I think that you have to let people have their reactions, and if you want to or don't want to read them that's cool. It's more the making fun of other people's reactions, or condemning them for it, that is uncool. A ton of folks were really mean to Alison when she was sad about Sirius and I really don't like seeing that sort of behaviour at all.

I know people who liked OotP and I think that's fine; I didn't enjoy it but I'm hoping that I'll enjoy HBP more.
