Monday Music: Magic Bus

So you know how last week I said that the universe tells me which song to pick each week? Well, yesterday I spent six hours standing on subway platforms or street corners having just missed a bus or train, only to get on a bus or train that is completely crowded and then doesn't go where it says its going to go and dumps me out someplace else. SIX HOURS. Believe me, I wished I had a goddamned magic bus.

So, why do I love "Magic Bus"? Claves.

You remember playing claves in like, 4th grade music class, right? "Magic Bus" is all about claves, or at least percussion, plus an acoustic guitar playing a Bo Diddley-like, or perhaps skiffle-like, beat. And it's sort of cute for a Who song; Pete's usual caustic anger is mostly absent. Though I admit my favorite lyric (other than "thrupence and sixpence every day/just to drive to my baby") is "You can't have it!"

"Magic Bus" was very popular at The Who's live shows, which makes sense. C____ says that The Who are at their best when you can hear Pete and Keith playing off each other, and this song is stripped down such that it's almost just that, just guitar and drums. To be honest, my favorite parts are when no one is singing. By the time Keith starts the triumphant crashing on the kit toward the end—because Roger finally has that bus he's been whining about—the song is already in a frenzy.

Mostly, though, I just like turning it up, letting my hair down, and dancing around the house like a goddamned hippie.
