I realized there were things I hadn't actually posted about, so thoughts on the Project Runway finale and winner, Top Chef, CSI, the return of (Veronica) Mars, and the American Idol results show below. Or as Waldo Leidecker would put it, "her usual roundup of bizarre and nondescript characters culled from every level of society."
I was quite pleased by the Project Runway finale. According to Tim Gunn's podcast, the producers put that horrible 13th look thing in because the designers weren't creating enough drama (unlike last year with the dreadful Wendy and the Kara Saun shoe thing). While I understand the need for good tv, I think reality producers often underestimate how much drama is inherent in the finale of the show. To my mind it was unnecessary but it did provide the happy return of Andrae and Nick, whom I love.
I also feel the judges made the right decision. Dan is talented but just isn't quite ready yet to flesh out his own point of view, so it would have been premature--he'll benefit so much more from that at a later date. I did feel a little bad for Santino because he clearly worked so hard throughout but having a hard life does not give you license to be an asshole. Chloe's clothes looked a lot better in motion than on the pictures and I was so pleased for her; she can really capitalize on this. (So can Kara; though she only had that decoy collection she was still under the tent, reviewed by the press and seen by the celebs. Her clothes are my favorites.)
Top Chef is definitely leaving me cold. I might watch another episode. I'm really interested in cooking and I do watch cooking shows but as P said, I can't taste the food. Part of the appeal of PR is that we in the audience can be a judge even if we don't get to actually vote. However, I'm pulling for that guy who won the first challenge because he seems really cool.
Oh, CSI. I'm not sure why I thought they would be able to resolve the whole Nick-gets-buried storyline in an emotionally satisfying way; they certainly dropped the ball on Nick-gets-stalked. But there were little hints! I feel the producers really cannot decide if they want to be Law and Order with the almost no personal info or have subtle ongoing stories but they aren't doing it very well. Creating rich characters and then not really developing them? Sheesh, I could be reading HP canon. What this means in practical terms is that there are two or three episodes on my TIVO and I'm just not in a rush to watch them, though I may tonight just to clean out the thing.
Thank goodness Veronica Mars is back to fill my Wednesday night hole left by Project Runway. This particular episode was a bit lackluster mostly due to a sort of lame MOTW and the absence of Wallace and Weevil but I'm loving the My Two Dads. I feel that if people cared more about hot middle aged guys we'd be wading through piles of Keith/Cook slash but sadly, few do. I can't even get with that ROI enough to write something. I read that the head of programming for the new CW network is the current head of UPN which makes me cautiously optimistic that we'll get a third season, given UPN's constant committment to the show. It certainly hits its demo, so it has that going for it.
Oh, Ryan and Simon's missing button. *happy sigh*
ladyjaida very nicely texted me with results-show updates while I watched VM at chez
mistful. I love the return of the half hour results show; so much less padding and so much less agony for the bottom two who aren't going home. Ryan was just racing through those results, wasn't he? On Ace, Simon was totally right that it was a wake-up call for him and his fans. On Kevin, sit tight. I think he'll be with us for a long time. Which really is just cruel since he won't win and since half the people voting for him are doing it as a joke. On Lisa, she has got to put some passion and energy into her performances and sooner rather than later or she will be gone. On Melissa, I hate to say this, but you also never really connected with anyone and when that's true all it takes is one off night. Next week, the fifties and guest Barry Manilow. I shudder to think.
