You know, one of the few things I liked about the VA election this year was that Tim Kaine started to break that Democratic mold where religion and values are dirty words. He talked openly about his faith and how it guided his life, and made it okay to be a Dem. *and* a moral person. I hatehatehate the assumption that a lot of people have about liberals/Democrats being Godless heathens. Just because we don't shove it in people's faces doesn't mean we don't have faith. Hmph. Anyway, this rambly-ness is all to say that you are right - the Democrats do need to get on the ground and engage people on the things that are important to them, and faith - any faith - is a big one.
