Spamming you before I head to [livejournal.com profile] calloocallay's and do some real work.

So I'm eating my breakfast and watching this show where they play a classic video from an artist and then the latest thing. And while with an artist like Madonna or U2 or Green Day or even Mariah you think, wow, totally still relevant, playing Liz Phair's "Stratford-on-Guy" and then her latest piece of radio-friendly pop-rock crap is just depressing.

I'm also not sure that the Golden Globes are the best way to honor the memory of Dr King but I'm not in charge of scheduling award shows. (Red carpet coverage is SO 1998.) But look for reactions to the awards themselves later.

Syriana

Saw Syriana last night and since then have been perusing the very mixed reviews (Yahoo!Movies has an excellent list of links to various reviews for every movie) and I have to say, I agree more with the group of critics giving it a B-/C (particularly LIsa Schwartzbaum of Entertainment Weekly) than those giving it an A.

Syriana, cut for some spoilers. )

So color me disappointed. Though the performances were stellar, every single one, and the issues important, Syriana ultimately fails to come together, and because of this doesn't carry the impact it should.

This is my punishment for checking LJ when I should be working on my prospectus.

I just want to make very clear that I do not feel that I am in any position to dictate what sort of fanfiction people should or should not write, or the degree to which they do any investigation on what they are writing. I often use the phrase "perhaps you should not" and that phrase is meant to indicate cause and effect and not any sort of royal decree on my part. An example: If you don't like public transportation, then perhaps you should not sell your car. I don't care whether you sell your car or not, but I'm not interested in listening to you bitch about the subway if you do. I like that phrase and would rather not have to give it up as I find it illustrative but if it's going to cause all this trouble then I will cease to use it.

However, I will say that it baffles me that people want to write about things that they don't seem to have an actual interest in. That confuses me as I thought it was interest in canon or the characters therein that made people want to write fanfiction, but it appears that I have been mistaken.

And now I go back to work.

ETA: Jo, who loves you baby? However, comments are off as I didn't mean for this to be wanky, either; I was just trying to say, no, I am not trying to tell anyone what to write.

I had it on a time delay (thank you, TIVO!) but caught up just in time for Denzel to give out the best picture-drama. All along, I was chatting away with [livejournal.com profile] wordplay and [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato. I love the Globes because everyone mingles between awards and gets drunk and they're sitting with their friends at big tables and they don't have a host and TV and movies are all together.

So spoilerific, I think I refer to every single award given, nearly all the presenters, and assorted people in the crowd. With guest commentary by Carrie and Crystal. )

In local news, I can't believe no one was hurt in that tanker explosion out in Queens.
