Loafed the morning away, then D and I met Cassie for lunch near a mall in Santa Monica, where we had very nice corn soup and some totally excellent Ginger Limeade that I later decided to replicate. D wandered off to get his money laundered or something, and Cassie was off to meet a friend, so I amused myself in the mall.

The mall was oddly depressing, even though it is out of doors (as are nearly all malls in LA; more like a really big multi-story plaza). First, no stores to buy clothes in--no Lane Bryant, no Avenue, and as far as I could tell no women's sections in either Macy's or Bloomies. At Bloomies I went to the MAC counter as I needed some refills on mascara and pressed powder and I'm always looking for a new lipgloss. So I say to the girl behind the counter:

Clio: I also need some pressed powder. I usually get the very light kind.
Girl: I would recommend fuller coverage for you.
Clio: (annoyed, because please, I have awesome skin) Well, I'll be happy to try it out.
Girl: (applies) See how it covers up that shinyness?
Clio: Actually, I have really dry skin; I just came in from outside where it is quite hot.
Girl: Yes, but the shine.
Clio: I'm worried about how it looks so dry on my forehead actually.
Girl: That's because you're used to the shine.

At which point I really want to say: That shine is motherfucking sweat becasue it's 87 degrees outside, BITCH but I show remarkable restraint and say that I would prefer my usual powder. Then we look at lipglosses.

Girl: This is our new lipgloss which is much less sticky and it also doesn't accentuate lines or texture in your lips [looking pointedly at mine].
Clio: I see.

Well, I did get lipgloss, powder and mascara; it just wasn't the ego boost I was looking for. I'll stick to the drag queens at the Spring street store, thanks. Even the Apple store didn't make me feel better, so I got a yogurt smoothie to boost my protein levels and called Carrie to get my mind off being SO OLD.

D arrived and we went home, then he dropped me off at my friends A&E's up in the valley. So much fun to see them and their kids, Q&A. (No, really; those are their initials.) We had sushi and then went back and I got to be guest reader for the kids bedtime and I told Q a story about my friend L's son and how he has a purple lightsaber and also likes dinosaurs and has a sister. Then we walked up to a little hill on their property and had a cocktail and a chat while we looked out over the city. Excellent night.
