This year, 73 stories in 38 fandoms, including the fandom I both wrote in and got fic for, Vertigo (Midge/Judy). I received Portrait of Carlotta and I wrote To Live My Life the Way I Want and you could read both but definitely the former.

I've kept the fic by fandom and divvied them up into: mostly femslash with some lady-centered gen; mostly het with het-background gen; mostly slash with some dude-centered gen; gen and threesomes.

Ladies! Anne of GG, Cagney and Lacey, Carol, Clue, Heiress, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters RPF, Justified, Miss Fisher, Price of Salt, Rosemary and Thyme, Tipping the Velvet, Whip It; 27 )

Het! 10 Things I Hate About You, Actor RPF, Arrival, Bob's Burgers, Broad City, Brooklyn, Hail Caesar!, Lord Peter, Persuasion, Selfie, The Thin Man; 23 )

Dudes! All The President's Men, Eagle of the Ninth, Good Will Hunting, Hamilton RPF, Metropolitan, Moby-Dick, Nero Wolfe, Popstar, The Sting; 15 )

The Rest! GBBO, Poirot, The Martian, Singin' in the Rain; 7 )

First, THANK YOU. I think of Yuletide as more of an opportunity to write something a little different than request something to exacting specifications, so whatever you write is more like a totally awesome bonus than the entire reason I'm participating. In other words, NO PRESSURE. This, and my comments on the assignment, are really just suggestions in case you'd like some.

The most important thing really is no deathfic and I prefer a happy ending. I don't mind working for the happy ending; angst that ends well is splendid. Downer endings, though, kinda bum me out. I'm not a freak about plot—in many of the stories I love nothing really happens except maybe an internal change in a character or an emotional realization. Characters are always more important to me than plot and I adore great conversation. So feel free to have them just sitting around drinking coffee and talking about great Heart songs, or have them find a way to Save the World from Certain Destruction, or anything in between! I've asked for women or pairs of women, but while femslash is welcome it isn't expected and certainly not required.

If you want more of a sense of the sort of stories I adore, since Yuletide is its own animal, you can check out the Yuletide stories I've bookmarked and also the ones that I've received (anything here that was posted in December).

This year I wrote quite a bit in the optional details so I don't have more to add—honestly you should feel free to do what you like!

Mostly, thank you in advance; I know that anything you do will be awesome, because it will mean more fic for one of these fandoms, and isn't that the whole point?

For the first time I have finished nearly all of the Yuletide fic I wanted to read before the New Year reveal

Let's start the recs, as we should, with the three (!) fics I received as gifts:

True Blue (2163 words)
Fandom: Clueless (1995)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Dionne Davenport & Cher Horowitz
Characters: Cher Horowitz, Dionne Davenport
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge, Canon - Book & Movie Combination, Flirting, Pillow Fights, Legally Blonde References
Summary: The night before college graduation, Cher and De have a sleepover. It's way existential. Or something.
Their conversation is so perfect! They contrast Cher's law school ambitions with Elle Woods! Couldn't be better.

Slow Hushed Touch (4384 words)
Fandom: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Melinda May/Skye
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Babbling, Bonding, Awkward Flirting, Rescue
Summary: "I know you're not a damsel in distress. Damsels can't keep up with me."
A big downside to all the AoS fic is that it feels exhausting, so I really want everyone to check this one out. It's everything you want a Melinda/Skye fic to be, like combat teaching that's more like flirting, and Melinda drawing some lines in the sand that Skye respects but still pushes back on. Seriously fantastic.

Ants (6322 words)
Fandom: New Girl
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Jessica Day & Cece Parekh
Characters: Jessica Day (New Girl), Cece Parekh
Additional Tags: Female Friendship, Backstory, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary: Sometimes the unhappiest beginnings make for the happiest of endings.
It's just—it is every single thing I wanted or dreamed of when I asked for Jess and Cece friendship fic. It's really funny, it's totally in tune with where the show is right now, it has all five of them perfectly in character, and even contains a reference to the Golden Girls. Just really so, so, so amazingly good.

One more above the cut because other than my gift fics, this is my favorite story of Yuletide this year:

My Boy Carved Coffins (5346 words)
Fandom: Moby Dick - Herman Melville
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Ishmael/Queequeg, Ishmael/Tranquo, Ishmael/OMC, Ishmael/Sebastian/Pedro
Characters: Ishmael (Moby Dick - Herman Melville), Queequeg (Moby Dick - Herman Melville), Tranquo (Moby Dick - Herman Melville), Sebastian (Moby Dick - Herman Melville), Pedro (Moby Dick - Herman Melville)
Additional Tags: Canonical Character Death
Summary: Ishmael copes with the aftermath of the wreck of the Pequod.
So perfectly Melvillian, with Ishmael carrying Queequeg's coffin around with him from ship to ship to ship, trying to find the homeland of his "husband." And the ending is perfection itself.

Beneath this first cut, one story each from Brick, Casablanca, Lord Peter Wimsey, Golden Girls, Jonny Quest, A League of Their Own, Nancy Drew, The Nanny, Singin' in the Rain and The Third Man

one-off fantoms )

Two-a-piece from Friends, Justified, Persuasion, and Runaways RPF (KStew/Dakota Fanning)

two of each )

There are three stories about The Heat (plus one that's really a Gravity story) and really you should just read all of them because The Heat. I'm also reccing all four Frances Ha fics because the one that will speak to you is really more of a matter of personal taste/feelings than quality, as they are all really well done.

heck yeah movies about ladies )

Four each for Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine

they're sort of sister sitcoms really )

For New Girl technically it's five fics with the one that I got as a gift, but here are the other four I also recommend.

jess and cece and winston and nick and schmidt, oh my! )

And finally, twelve more Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fics, including a little of everything.

Melinda, Skye, Ward, Fitz and Simmons, plus team building and special guest appearances by Maria and Natasha )

I'm also posting these all on tumblr, each by each. Happy reading!

My requests:

Clueless: Cher and Dionne
New Girl: Cece and Jess
Agents of SHIELD: Melinda and Skye

Best friends and then, well, something else. Do what you will! I just want to see them interacting in awesome ways. I am incredibly amenable to femslash for any of these ladies, but that isn't required or expected. Friendship fic for Cher & Dionne and Cece & Jess is so much more than enough. And for Melinda and Skye, they're not really friends and maybe they never would be but watching them rub up against each other is fascinating because they're coming from such completely different places. Mostly I just adore character interaction, and I'm a giant whore for dialogue (though with Melinda and Skye, I would happily read lots of Skye trying to get Melinda to talk, and Melinda communicating entirely silently).

Project Runway: Dom

She's like the Jay of this season (if your PR knowledge goes all the way back to s1). She's just so chill and cool, and managed to be friendly with pretty much everyone, and everyone saw her as their main competition but also wanted her to come with them to fashion week. That's quite a trick to pull off.

Anything here is awesome. Her thoughts on being a black lady in the racist fashion industry, on what being on PR means to her, on how she came up with the prints she created for her collection, on her real thoughts on her competitors. Or show how she was able to keep her head down and stay cool as the challenges went on. Look, you offered her, you know how amazing she is.

Mostly, thank you in advance; I know that anything you do will be awesome, because it will mean more fic for one of these fandoms, and isn't that the whole point?

My request list is four female friendships: Cher and Dionne from Clueless, Cece and Jess from New Girl, Britta and Shirley from Community, and Leslie and Ann from Parks and Recreation. I do tend to read and write romances, and smut, but that doesn't mean I'm expecting that here. Friendship-centered gen is fantastic too, as I love the friendships between these characters and the way they interact; I've written genfic myself for Yuletide. (However when it comes to smut I do love dirty talk and an equal balance of forces.) I'm not great at compiling recs, but I do write what I like to read, which is mostly ensemble fics with a lot of friendship and romance.

Mostly, thank you in advance; I know that anything you do will be awesome, because it will mean more fic for one of these fandoms, and isn't that the whole point?
jlh: Tori Amos playing a black piano (music: Tori Amos black piano)
I got femslash for Yuletide!!

Always There Whip It! Bliss/Pash, 1600 words. Perhaps the love Bliss Cavendar had been searching for had always been there for her all along …

Super great, super fun, super satisfying. I am well pleased. Go, read!

I've spent the past few days reading other Yuletide fics and will put up a rec post hopefully later this week.

In the meantime, I'm organizing my fics during my week off and I'm adding some freeform tags to my stuff on AO3. What tags have you found work for you? What tags are you using other than the ones you're prompted to use?

Here's some that I figure I'm going to be using:
tags cut for your reading pleasure )

I admit I'm nervous about the female/chromatic/LGBTQ character tags; I always feel like people are looking for something that's more specific than that, or using it to mean something other than what it literally means. I hate excusing myself with the letter-of-the-law excuse, but does just having a female character as a big part of a fic qualify for the tag? Can you only label gen fics as "friendship"?

The thing is, I write a lot of ensemble fics, especially for HP, so I hesitate at the term "main character"; I rarely write long fics about one or two characters. It's entirely possible that my hesitation on all of these "does it count" matters is predicated on the insistence of something being a "main character" or a "main plot" when I honestly feel that the HP stuff has 8-10 main characters, roughly equal in their POV scenes, and therefore lots of different ship types, etc. Hopefully I will not get angry comments!

My recs on delicious and here on LJ aren't that extensive and right now are mostly Star Trek and Rymon. I do write what I like to read, which has been centered on Harry Potter, Idol RPF, and lately Star Trek, plus a pile of one-offs.

I wrote Community fic! Gen, even!

Ancient Artifacts and Modern Rituals, PG, 4780 words.
From TV Tropes: "The Vacation Episode is a one-off episode where the characters leave their familiar grounds for a well-deserved rest. The vacation will invariably be set in a faraway and exotic location for maximum impact; given the higher costs of shooting on location, the episode will often be longer than usual, to make best use of the budget. A Special Guest or three might also be included."
or, the one where the gang go to New York City for spring break.

Thanks so much to my betas sistermagpie and emeraldwoman, for calming my fears. It was a big leap! My recipient wanted an episode of the show, basically, and so for the first time ever, I wrote something gen and canon-esque. I'm so pleased that she liked it! It was fun to write all the characters, plus the three "special guests", and pull together a complicated plot in a limited space.

I've been updating my recs post as I go along, and I now have only RED, Community and Castle left to read through. But now that it won't be entirely obvious, I wanted to also point out the two excellent fics that I got to read before they were posted:

Esther and the Egg by [personal profile] sistermagpie. Fairy Tales, PG, 3200 words. The Egg snatched nearly every chorus girl at The Club Araby. Then he snatched Esther.

Alternates by [livejournal.com profile] wildgoosery. Back to the Future, PG-13, 3400 words. Marty's life isn't at all like how he left it.

So in addition to my awesome Hairspray fic Where I've Been, I also got two Yuletide Madness ficlets! Very exciting!

Double Happiness: Tiger Heart. Jade has lunch with Winston.

WKRP: Morning with Johnny. Bailey tries to talk to Johnny before 3p.m.

Chromatic Yuletide led me to request Double Happiness, and WKRP has been one of my requests as long as I've done Yuletide (which, honestly, I thought would never be fulfilled!) Next year I'll have to come up with all new requests!

Here are my recs: Carol Burnett-Julie Andrews Actor RPF, Anne of Green Gables, The Apartment, Stoppard's Arcadia, Arrested Development, Austen (S&S and Persuasion), Brick, Calvin & Hobbes, Golden Girls, Great Gatsby, James Bond, The Runaways (2010), Ramona Series (Beverly Cleary), A Single Man, Victor/Victoria, Whip It, Good Wife/White Collar. )
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Default)
This is my third Christmas on my own, and I'm getting into the groove of celebrating it in my own way. When I was younger I really loved Christmas, and then in my mid-twenties a series of things happened that caused my family to crumble, a lot of those things surrounding Christmas, so there were some seriously lousy Christmases in there. But I think I'm getting my Christmas mojo back, slowly but surely. Last year I went half-way, but this year I wanted to be really Christmassy so I decided to forgo the kind movies-and-Chinese invite from my pal Jeremy. Instead I'm home listening to Christmas music and reading Yuletide stories. Earlier I made myself some sweet potato waffles; later I'm cooking the duck breast I bought myself for a treat.

I don't exchange presents with anyone—I miss the shopping, but hopefully it will come around again at some point—so I don't have a "haul" to report. But I did get one present anyway:
Where I've Been, Hairspray (2007): Corny Collins/Motormouth Maybelle. Really beautiful, from Maybelle's POV, on the push-pull of her whatever-it-is with Corny and the inevitable ambivalence. Thank you, Yuletide writer!

More recs from Yuletide later, of course! And have a great day, however you're spending it.
jlh: photo of old fashioned green typewriter keys (typewriter green)
Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you, for taking up my Yuletide request at such short notice (yesterday! my goodness!). I've had treats that were amazing, I've had pinch hitters before in my time in Yuletide, and for me the pleasure is really in writing a story in a small fandom so as I said in my yuletide letter you have the link to, anything you do will be amazing.

I just wanted to give you an extra special thank you for seeing my prompts and picking them up. It's like being adopted all over again.

I requested Kim and Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks, and got TWO gift fics!

Growing Upside Down. Lindsay finally discovers the part of her she's been trying to find since high school. Femslash.

write her name in the sky. Kim broke up with Daniel for the last time three days after she and Lindsay got back from their summer adventure.

There were also two Rymon fics written for Yuletide this year, the first for [personal profile] ignaz and the second for [livejournal.com profile] delilah_joy:

And When It Was Good. There are shows when it's good, when they're on.

Where We're Going, and How to Get Back. There are things less like relationships.

Go, read, comment! Yayness!

What happens when I finally finish up with holidays and grading is that I spam LJ, apparently. Anyway, Yuletide H-Z had a little less yield than I originally thought, so I just edited the previous post to include two SYTYCD Travis/Ivan stories (please R&R, as they don't have a lot of comments!), plus Heathers, Little Miss Sunshine and Some Kind of Wonderful.

Or maybe I'm just kind of high energy at the moment. Must be as productive as possible to take advantage!
jlh: Chibi of me in an apron with a cocktail glass and shaker. (Timothy Olyphant)
I wrote So Many Roads to Choose, a Broken Hearts Club fic, for Eldree. [livejournal.com profile] ali_wildgoose was general cheerleader and beta, and [livejournal.com profile] jm_cats provided the very necessary canon beta. Thanks to both of you!!! And if you haven't seen this excellent independent film about a circle of gay friends in LA, rent it now!

On the train back to New York I read stores from fandoms H-N, and will have something to say about those tomorrow.
jlh: David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Rob Brydon, banner says congratuwelldone (congratuwelldone)
I haven't been able to get online much, but now that I'm back in the land of the free wifi and the reliable cell signal, I am writing up the Yuletide reading I've done so far! First, the fandoms I requested: Little House, Idol RPS, WKRP, and The Philadelphia Story.

Laura Ingalls Wilder: Little House books
I've already linked you to the story I got for my Yuletide present, No Doubts. Apparently Charles/Caroline was the request this year because nearly all of the other stories featured them!
  • A Land So Wild and Savage starts when Charles was a young man, and ends with him watching Almanzo and Cap going to see the mythical claim south of town. Great perspective on Charles's sense of adventure and need to be free, and the way that Caroline copes with it.
  • Wisconsin focuses on Caroline, alone with the girls at night in the Big Woods, waiting for Charles to come home from town.
  • Little Settlement on the Moon can be summed up in three words: steam punk Ingalls. Just go with it; as an experiment in genre crossing it's very interesting.
  • There were also two stories about the Olesons: Moving West is about the Olesons as a family, and Blue Eyes is about Nellie's jealousy of Laura. I'm not that into the Olesons but if you are, read up!

WKRP: At the Top of the Hour is bizarre and wacky just like the show was, and features Bailey Quarters, Venus, and Andy, so I can't bitch too much that there's no Johnny. If you loved the show you'll definitely like this story!

I just posted about his, so I won't repeat myself too much here, but I'm just over the moon that there is Ryan Seacrest/Simon Cowell in Yuletide and it wasn't even in answer to my request! It's like I got two Yuletide stories instead of just one! There are three other stories in addition to How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away; all centered on David Cook. One is sort of a blockbuster, so be sure to give the other three some love!

As for The Philadelphia Story, well, it's another place where what I love about it and what other people love about it aren't the same thing at all. I adore Liz, and had requested a story about her and Mike. What's been posted are the usual Dexter/Tracy/Mike stories, which while I understand, I'm frankly not that interested in. But if you're less of a fan of Liz than I am, read and enjoy!
